Excellent food cooked to perfection and just exactly what we wanted. The owners made us feel so welcome it was like staying with family. The bed was very comfortable and the room well laid out.

The bed was very comfortable, great nights sleep. Bedding and pillows excellent quality. Hospitality tray was well stocked and delicious! The en-suite was a good size and products provided were great quality.
United KingdomAs soon as we arrived at the Sumatra Guesthouse we were made to feel at home with such a warm welcome from Peter and Rosnita. Nothing was too much trouble. The whole place was absolutely spotless and the rooms were very comfortable with a lot of attention to detail. The breakfast was absolutely amazing and there was so much choice including an Indonesian breakfast which was lovely. One of our party is gluten and dairy intolerant and the was catered for very well. We would definitely stay here again when we return to Whitby.

We didn’t quite manage to eat all the breakfast, which if we had would have world been a Herculean feat. Scrumptious and locally sourced ingredients Peter very knowledgable about the area and if felt like we were welcome visitors in a family home. Never met the owners before but they felt like old friends. Highly recommend

Host Information
Privately owned by Peter McKenzie-Midlane since 1985, the Victorian property has been refurbished to a very high standard throughout.
Peter and Rosnita offer you their world experience and will provide a home from home relaxing and comfortable stay. Our style of hospitality comes from our lessons learned while travelling and living in many different countries and we also know how to provide a warm Yorkshire welcome. Peter has travelled all over the world on business and married his Indonesian wife in 2007. Rosnita was born in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia and speaks fluent English, Bahasa (Indonesian), Norwegian and limited Japanese.
The property is located in West Terrace, on the West Cliff area of Whitby, which is a beautiful Gothic town with a whaling, smuggling, fishing and jet mining history. Only a 4 minute walk to Whitby Pavilion, Whitby beach, the whalebone, Captain Cook statue. The town centre is only a 6 minute walk and has many local pubs, restaurants (sit- in or take away), and two supermarkets nearby. There is plenty more you could discover about Whitby! We have fast broadband, free Wi-Fi throughout the property when staying at our guesthouse. We provide parking permits (scratch cards) inclusive of the room charge. Look for the sign W-zones.
