Guest house The Barn Annexe
Port Lane, Little Hallingbury, Bishops Stortford, CM22 7PQ, United Kingdom – Great location - show map
P & Kevin
We are fortunate to be situated in a rural location, yet 1.5 miles from the town of Bishop's Stortford. We have beautiful views and lovely countryside walks. Walking distance to our village pub which serves excellent meals. In the summer months there are plenty of outdoor areas for guests to enjoy, whether its a sunshine drink or just watching the local wildlife. Latchmead history - over the years the house has gone through many name changes. In the early 1930's Latchmead was a farm house. At some point there was a greyhound race track, and by the late 60's it was owned by a golf professional. In the 1970's the house was owned by a family who bread Labrador's and used the premises as dog kennels. I was told the owners bred all the puppies used in the Andrex toilet tissue adverts. This family lived here until we purchased the house in 2003 and applied for change of use to operate a B&B.
Kevin and I have been together for 25 years. My grandmother was Italian and ran a hotel on the Adriatic coast of Italy. This is where I spent most of my summer holidays helping in the kitchens. As I grew older I was allowed to work in reception and bar areas. My parents have always worked in hospitality, my dad helped run my nans hotel and when they moved to England my parents worked and run pubs. Now retired my parents also ran a Bed & Breakfast. It was inevitable that Kevin and I would follow this path and we have been running The Barn Annexe for 13 years. Despite my background, this was Kevin's brainchild and thanks to his foresight and lots of hard work we are lucky to share our home and bring life back to this lovely place.
Little Hallingbury is a village located in Essex, UK. It is between river and forest, on a high rise of ground, near the main railway at Bishop's Stortford and 3 miles to the M11 motorway. There are appoximately 1000 people living in our village. Little Hallingbury Mill was built as a silk mill in 1874 and there was milling on this site for many years before it was turned into a restaurant. Although it is not in commercial use the mill machinery is in working condition. On the north of the village lies Hatfield Forest, designated as a Royal Hunting Forest from the time of the Norman kings. The forest is open to the public and covers 1,049 acres (4 km2) of woodland, grassland with trees, lake and marsh. Portingbury Hills in Hatfield Forest is suggested to be a defended settlement or farmstead dated to the Iron Age. According to the National Trust "The main rectangular mound is approximately 100 by 70 feet (30 by 21 m) and is surrounded by a ditch 25/35 feet wide, with a flat top." We have some beautiful countryside walks incorporating the River Stort and several village pubs en-route.
