Excellent breakfast. Smaller portions, but really top quality food and ingredients. Always more coffee and drinks available if you ask. The hosts Lisa and Harry are very thoughtful and outgoing people, always taking the time to talk to their guests and get to know their needs. This must be the best place to stay in the whole of Helmsley.
NetherlandsThe perfect B and B experience…a reflection of the town and its lovely people!
United States of AmericaCarlton Lodge is on the main road into town and only a few minutes' walk from the central square. We enjoyed the breakfast for its variety and quality. Harry and Lisa have put a great deal of thought into planning and there is really good provision for walkers and cyclists, as well as for ordinary tourists like ourselves. They provide information in advance about places to eat and are very helpful conversationalists.
United KingdomWonderful warm staff who catered for every need. The breakfast was excellent and as a vegetarian had wonderful delicious options that catered for all dietary preferences.
United KingdomWe could not fault our stay at all, we didn't meet Lisa but Harry was lovely gave us some tips on where to walk, the breakfast was lovely and the rooms very comfortable x
United KingdomThe breakfast was exceptional and beautifully presented. Ingredients were either homemade or locally sourced. And there were plenty of offers of extra toast and tea! It is in a beautiful location in the heart of Helmsley and Harry and Lisa know the locality very well so can advise on places to eat, walks to take, and other activities you can do. Nothing is too much trouble and the living room is a lovely place to relax after breakfast and browse with reading material provided for some local inspiration. We had a lovely comfortable, spacious room and it was very quiet at all times.
United KingdomTraditional village lodge. Comfortable and welcoming.

Carlton Lodge is a friendly B&B, with 8 simple rooms (7 of them are ensuite) and delicious breakfasts, located in the spectacular North York Moors National Park. If you're exploring, walking, cycling, running, dark skies gazing or simply wanting to escape and recharge your batteries, you’ll be warmly welcomed. We're not boutique but we do have a genuine love for the great outdoors so offer the perfect stay for walkers, cyclists, runners, big explorers, mini-explorers and four-legged friends (on request only). A number of picturesque local walks, and superb national trails, are on our doorstep including the Cleveland Way, Ebor Way, Inn Way to the North York Moors, Abbey Way and charming Tabular Hills Walk. We’re a short stroll from Helmsley’s beautiful ancient square, castle ruins, colourful walled garden and magnificent Duncombe Park. The town is home to a rich variety of local delis, bakers, butchers, bookshops, florists, pubs, restaurants and cosy tearooms. The North York Moors Heritage Steam Railway is only a short drive away. The beautiful abbeys of Riveaux and Byland, the medieval city of York and the foodie town of Malton are all Yorkshire gems waiting to be discovered.
When we are not looking after you (cooking breakfasts and house keeping) you'll find us looking after Carlton Lodge's wonderful garden or enjoying the great outdoors. Running, walking and food are our true passions so we couldn't be located in a better place. However, we're sometimes pottering around on our bikes through the quiet country lanes and neighbouring villages. We're also proper foodies and can honestly say we're not disappointed in Helmsley. We've two Michelin Star restaurants in neighbouring villages and some rather special public houses nearby that other the perfect place for a holiday treat.
With its ancient square (Friday’s market day), castle ruins, bubbling beck and stone cottages, Helmsley is picture perfect. The friendly town has an abundance of local shops, delis, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs all surrounded by spectacular countryside. Nine national walking trails, and plenty of charming day walks, are on our door step plus lots of lovely eateries. The family friendly castle towers over the town and provides a wonderful backdrop. Helmsley Walled Garden is a colourful five-acre spot of tranquility and dog friendly if your 4-legged friends are kept on a lead. Stroll through glasshouses, relax in the Vinehouse Cafe or browse the garden shop. We're a short stroll from Duncombe Park which is perfect for a walk, jog or picnic. Follow Countryside or Riverside trails lush grass terraces, ancient trees and ornate temples. The park offers superb views over Helmsley and is a National Nature Reserve. The National Centre for Birds of Prey The National Centre for Birds of Prey is situated in the magnificent grounds of Duncombe Park. You’ll get to enjoy spectacular flying demonstrations as the centre houses the largest collection of birds of prey in the north of England.
