The Carnarvon Arms is a country inn, located next door to Highclere Castle, on the route of The Wayfarers Walk. This Grade II listed building offers guests free onsite parking and free WiFi throughout.

The 18 bedrooms each have tea/coffee-making facilities, a flat-screen TV with Freeview, and a hairdryer.

The property features a dining room with a high-vaulted ceiling, and a thriving friendly bar with a modern British menu. A traditional full English is available each morning, made using locally sourced produce. The property can cater for, and accommodate, parties and weddings.

The inn is 5 miles from Newbury town center and Newbury Race Course is 5.5 miles away. The Carnarvon Arms was built as a coaching inn in the 1800s. It provided a stop-off for travelers to Highclere Castle, now the setting for TV drama Downton Abbey.

  • is Highclere Castle walking distance from The Carnarvon Arms ? If we travelled by train to Newbury how easy is it to reach The Carnarvon Arms ? maybe taxi ?

    Dear guest, To the gates of Highclere castle the walk takes about 5 minutes, however from the gates to the house it is a further 15-20 minutes from there, so we do advise our guests to book a taxi, the company we recommend is AVE Cabs on 0163531212

  • We are visiting family over Christmas with our dog. I see that you can allow dogs. Are your rooms on the ground floor or do you have any on the ground floor. Was wondering if our dog needed a toilet break in the night if it is easy to get outside. Are dogs allowed in bar / restaurant?

    The answer is we are extremely dog friendly, there's an enclosed garden directly outside the hotel itself, especially for our furry friends, and dogs are certainly allowed in the bar areas :)

  • Hi, do you have any double rooms with a walk in shower on the ground floor? My Mum cannot climb stairs and needs a walk in shower as she cannot get into a bath. Many thanks

    All our rooms, except two on the top floor, are ground floor & our showers are walk in with a slight step over the shower threshold, so Mum should be fine x
