Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.
It was a lovely city to visit. So much history!! Easy to get around on foot and by bus. Great places to eat and drink. Lots of shopping options - usual high street brands and lots of local businesses.
Loved York Minster and the Shambles...

Parking is the biggest problem, but saying that as York is flat it is so easy to walk everywhere. The busses are plentiful and frequent should you want to use them. Everything is within a short walking distance. There are so many things to see, and visit. The array of eateries was quite amazing and the prices more than reasonable. You can go as an individual or family and there are so many things to do and see for all age groups. The people are so friendly and accomodating. York is steeped in so much history.

There are lots of things to do in York and I found staying in the city centre a great place to experience some of it's delights. I enjoyed an informative journey on the hop-on hop-off bus tour, which also gave me a good over view of the city centre. The Jorvik Centre was an experience and was not what I was expecting, namely the motorised carriages that formed part of the experience. The art gallery had a marvellous exhibition focused on drawing when I visited, it included work by teenagers who had worked with the artist - all absolutely brilliant! The cafe in the gallery is well worth a visit. The Bluebell pub on Fossegate is a wonderful haven from the bustle of the city. There is so much on offer in York.
We chose this hotel because of the good reviews and location and on site parking, unfortunately the only room available was a twin, best nights sleep I've had since we were married, the beds were so comfortable, room was a decent size en suite with everything you needed, even a fridge and small freezer compartment. And a fan. Really nice cooked breakfast in the morning. 10 min walk to the Minster and city centre. Staff were really welcoming and helpful, we will definitely book here again next time we come to York.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wheatlands Lodge Hotel. Our room was just so comfortable with a good hot powerful shower. The Hotel is in such a good location for exploring within easy walking distance to the centre with all the cobbled streets, great restaurants and there is just so much to see in York. Breakfast was a special meal, with a good range of personalised choices freshly cooked. .. great start to our day. Thank you, it was an absolute pleasure staying in your hotel and we will return.
I booked my room after checking out of an awful hotel. It was affordable, the staff were great and helpful, the room was clean and everything was working. The shower is a decent size and the bed was very comfy. It's only 8 mins from York city centre so the location is also great. It was my first time staying at a Radisson and am happy to say I'll do so several times more because you get what you expect.
Much more like a hotel than an B&B. Room comfy, warm and clean with tea making facilities. We stayed for the York Marathon and staff kindly put out an earlier continental breakfast so runners could fuel up and get to the start line in time. Breakfast very good, didn't use the bar due to early night but looked cosy and decent drink prices. Great location, about 10-15 minute walk to York City Centre.
Rooms were very clean, comfy beds, nice showers. Very historical, charming building but rooms had all the modern amenities you'd need as well. Breakfast was wonderful and set us up well for a full day of touring. All staff were very kind and helpful throughout our stay. We really enjoyed our stay in beautiful, historical York and especially felt a warm welcome from this little boutique hotel.
Lovely hotel very close to the gates of old York. The staff is exceptional, very kind and helpful. They serve good breakfast and they have a restaurant, and beer garden where they serve pizza. We enjoyed pizza in the beer garden when we arrived and it was very good. We had a family room which was good size and quite comfortable. Good shower and beds. We would stay here again.
The breakfast was very nice. The hotel is in a very old building and is charming. We found the room a bit cramped, with the bed very close to the wall. Everything was very clean. York is a very beautiful town, with lots to see. We were lucky to be there on the day King Charles was crowned, and witnessed the impressive public celebration of that event. We would stay again.
The Moxy is extremely well situated for the city centre, with great bars and restaurants near by and several convenience stores for obligatory hotel snacks. The room was clean, modern and comfortable and we loved our stay! The staff were also super friendly and helpful, providing lots of local knowledge which really appreciated as first time York visitors.
This was our second stay at this hotel.
The location is ideal as it's easy to find and only a 10 minute flat walk in to the city centre. Secure parking on site is a huge bonus as parking in the city is expensive.
Good size rooms. Excellent little bar and the staff are super friendly.
Will definitely book again when staying in York.
After 28 days of traveling and staying in a wide range of places The Dean Court in York was wonderful! It was about 37 degrees and we had a room with air conditioning they showed us around the hotel and brought ice and water to the room. Just those small gestures and I felt pampered! My bed was wonderfully comfortable.
Two night stay for my Husbands's birthday.
Great location, spacious clean room, delicious food, all good!
One more thing to add, the staff are an asset to the hotel, welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly.
The concierge team were wonderful.
I would highly recommend staying here for a break in York.
The hotel’s interior is beautiful and it’s in a fantastic part of York, close to the city centre but set slightly apart. The staff were lovely - bonus points for the gorgeous cat. We didn’t have breakfast this time but last time we stayed the garden was lovely for a drink.
I liked the outside of the hotel (the real hotel not the added on building i stayed in) and the location in the centre of York. And in fairness the room was nice even if it was in a very much less grand part of the hotel.
Staff were very accommodating, welcoming and super super helpful.
Our room was lovely - lots of character - and the location of the hotel was just fantastic. Exactly what we wanted for our time in York !
Great location just outside York City Centre. Value for money. Great breakfast. Clean room. Excellent staff and customer service honestly best staff I’ve seen at a hotel for a long time.
Room was just what we needed after a long drive and local visit. Explored locally in the evening appreciating the hotel's proximity to York city centre and all it's attractions.
Previously we had stayed at Hampton by Hilton in Bath, which was excellent.
The York hotel had similar facilities and was in a good city centre location.
