The Black Swan has been providing travelers with a warm welcome and famous hospitality for centuries.

Once the main stop off for weary travelers on a stagecoach route linking Leeds to York, The Black Swan dates back to the 15th century. With an Elizabethan building on one end, a Tudor one to the other and a Georgian House in the middle, the Black Swan is wonderfully higgledy-piggledy, with bags of character.

With its inviting open fires, cozy armchairs and warm welcome, The Black Swan is just the place to eat, drink, sleep and explore beautiful Helmsley from and attractions including nearby Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard, Helmsley Castle and Helmsley Walled Garden.

Offering views of either market square or beautiful gardens, these recently refurbished bedrooms have fresh, traditional décor and tea and coffee facilities. All rooms feature a private bathroom, flat-screen TV, desk and free Wi-Fi.

    We do have some vegetarian options on our menu. Food is served from 7:30am-9pm daily.

  • Is there private parking at the hotel? Is this limited?

    We do have two car parks available to our guests which are free to use. Whilst somewhat generous when we are full the parking can indeed be limited.

  • Is there a cash limit on the dinner menu?

    Our dinner menu is individually priced. If you book a dinner inclusive package, this will include £30 per person to use towards the dinner menu, you can go over this and pay the difference.

  • Do you have lift or ground floor room

    Unfortunately, we do not have lifts due to it being a A listed building, however we do have some ground floor rooms but this would rewire walking 50 yards to the back of the building to gain access to these rooms which are guaranteed no steps.

  • do you have rooms that require no or at least few stairs. My husband has some mobility problem.

    Most of our rooms do require going up one flight of stairs. There are a few rooms accessible without stairs but are only accessible as such by going round the outside of the hotel.

  • We would love to stay with you but we can not find if you are disabled friendly .stairs could be a problem

    We do have ground floor rooms, these are located towards the back of the building, to get to the Restaurant/Bar and Reception you would need to go round the outside of the hotel to avoid stairs.

  • As a wheelchair user can you tell me if the rooms at the rear of the property are level to get in and accessible inside

    We do have ground floor rooms, to get to the Restaurant/Bar and Reception you would need to go round the outside of the hotel to avoid stairs. Due to the building being listed, we do not have a designated accessible room
