FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a beautiful small town packed with history and old buildings. We visited the beautiful Chester Cathedral and took a hop-on-hop-off tour to see the most of the town efficiently. We highly recommend to go to Chester Market (e.g. for lunch) and to Bear and Billet for traditional Sunday roast. Dinner at Hickory's Smokehouse at the riverbank was lovely (table reservation recommended), and Roman Garden next to it is a must. A walk around the city center on the old Roman Walls was also nice. There are loads of different kind of shopping possibilities available, and also some very good charity shops worth visiting. We were lucky and had nice spring weather all the time during our visit.

Chester is a melting pot of culture and social classes which I loved. Shopping, bars, restaurants and nightlife, markets and live music. Friendly people and lovely walk along the river. Old buildings full of character plus modern twists. The old cathedral was lovely too. I cant wait to visit this wonderful city again soon!

Chester is beautiful, it has many shops, restaurants, pubs etc We visited the Food Show at Chester Racecourse which is always good for buying those special treats. The Food Show is well organised and provides something for everyone. Chester has a wide range of shops to suit all budgets. Chester has many restaurants to suit all tastes too. We have visited The Bluebell for tapas and the Koconut Grove, both have been amazing.

Huge, beautiful and fascinating Cathedral with excellent cafe food in stunning surroundings. Lovely old and interesting buildings in the town centre. Mostly traffic-free centre. All the big names if shopping is your thing, plus a wide range of indies. Grosvenor park and riverside walking is a delight. Walking almost the circumference of the town along the city walls gives great views and is traffic-free. Maybe a river trip next time.

So friendly and helpful staff. Room superb great breakfast and very close to train station and about 10 minuits walk to city centre. Liverpool approx 45 minutes by train to the river Mersey and city centre well worth a visit. Loved the queens hotel so much booked again for January. Pet friendly and will be back again nearer the summer to check out the other great activities that Chester offers. But the Queen hotel is our one stop destination from now on. The garden was very tranquil and the location to Chester city centre ,the room was a twin room on first floor no lift so that might be an issue for the less mobile but a lovely quiet location breakfast was fresh and a buffet would of preferred coffee and tea being served to you rather than the drinks being in flask type dispensers which was not hot but staff did replenish when asked just not what you expect of this type of hotel everyone wants a fresh hot tea and coffee staff very friendly and welcoming

The hotel staff are very friendly & kind.Good location near the train station and near to Chester city centre, very clean and the fact that they could have charged so much more the hotel but charged a very reasonable price instead esp for Chester, is every credit to the hotel.I will certainly recommend this hotel to anyone and will be going back again at somepoint. You probably will have to book quite early for this hotel as I can imagine it's really popular.
