Vanessa was Very friendly and helpful, the perfect host.
United KingdomVanessa ; very friendly and welcoming. Location; peaceful and bucolic, Room, large and bright. Amenities; so many! Posh toiletries, wine, scones withclotted cream, tea, cookies, and more. Couldn’t be more generous. AND home made jams!
United States of AmericaThe hotel is located in a perfect rural location for taking off on Yorkshire footpaths off the main roads. The breakfast was amazing and the rooms spotless. All the extra amenities added to the charm of the place.
United States of AmericaThe English breakfast is simple and good, but you can ask to add something, like yogurt and cereal. The lodge is located a bit away from the village so that you have to drive out for dinner. However, this is a very nice place to stay for a while and we would like to come back if we visit here around again.
United KingdomThe property is quite exceptional - very tasteful and beautifully maintained. So peaceful and relaxing. Vanessa is an excellent host - very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The cooked breakfast is delicious and all cooked to order so arrives piping hot and freshly cooked.
United KingdomA beautiful location. Quiet and peaceful with ducks ,chickens and fabulous walks from the Lodge. Vanessa was an amazing host. Nothing was too much trouble and she went the extra mile to ensure we had everything we needed. Rare to find someone so caring. Excellent breakfasts a bonus.
United KingdomBeautiful house with lovely gardens with resident rabbits on the lawn, ducks and chickens wandering around and even the remote control lawnmowers which helped to keep guests entertained! Lovely bedroom with beautiful view! Great choice of breakfast items. We felt as if nothing was too much trouble for the owner who was also a great source of information about the local area, recommending places to visit, some lovely walks and some very good tearooms and also ice-cream parlours!
United KingdomWe loved our three break at the lodge , the whole experience was fantastic , would highly recommend .
United KingdomWe had a lovely stay at Thornton Lodge in September 2021 and the host Vanessa was excellent and accommodating. The grounds are lovely and well kept. Our room was large with a king size bed so plenty of room to relax and sleep. Breakfast is excellent with fruit and yogurt, cereal, full English, beans on toast, egg or whatever is your preferred option. We will stay again as it is in a quiet location, short drive to Hawes and is ideal for getting to many waterfalls, and to see the the wonderful red squirrels at Snaizeholme which were a delight to see close up. Highly recommended.
United KingdomVanessa is a very kind and helpful person, always eager to improve the overall experience for people staying with her. She has abundant local knowledge that really helped us plan the few days we stayed with her so that we could pack in as much as possible. We managed to do a lot of things and see a lot of places in a short time due to her invaluable advice. She is very friendly and approachable . We cannot thank her enough .We had a really nice stay.

Host Info
The house was built as an amazing summer home for wealthy industrialists, then became a childrens hospital, then a home for adults with special needs, then a nursing home, then my home where I do b&b. Breakfast is from 8.30am - 9.15am and guests are welcome to bring their own drinks to enjoy at the house as I'm not licensed. Unless you're quite determined, it's probably too far to walk to the pub for dinner as it's about 3 miles each way to the nearest in Aysgarth and Askrigg. Thornton Lodge has one of the most peaceful locations in Wensleydale and is a great location to unwind in. It's also more suited to people who don't really like the concept of boutique hotels as we spent an awful lot of money creating an authentic environment rather than going down the boutique route.
I love walks from the house, up on the fells or down to Aysgarth Falls. I'm full of stories about life here and the house's history, which is fascinating. I work on my own, looking after guests so it is a very personal service when staying here.
Thornton Lodge is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. People come here for all sorts of reasons - to walk, cycle, explore quaint villages, churches, castles, as a base for longer holidays covering the Dales and Lake District or North Yorkshire Moors. If people don't know about the area prior to their visit they usually have a pleasant surprise over how lovely it is. I would always recommend doing some research though.
