The location is in mainland Orkney. It is situated between Kirkwall and Stromness and not far from any of the tourist sites. It's a short drive to the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar and nature reserve. It's not a long drive to the Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel. The only downside is if you want to eat out at night you have to either go to Kirkwall or Stromness to find it. We ate at the Kirkwall Hotel and the food was very good, the service excellent and fast. For nature/bird lovers, it isn't far from the Hobbister reserve, nor is it far to go to get to the Loons reserve. The reserve at the Birsay moor hide is a little further but worth it to see Red Throated Divers and chicks. The Earls Bu and Orphir round church are well worth a visit. St Magnus Cathedral is free. Everything is in reasonable distance, a trip to Deerness to see the Gloup is amazing. And the wartime history from both world wars is all around the island.

Orphir is a Small Village that we did not strictly stay within but the area that is a great central location to explore from being well connected, someone commented on the lack of signposts but quite honestly you dont need them and you soon have your bearings with plenty of free local maps, Smithfield's Hotel we found great a few times when we wanted an midday or evening meal otherwise we eat out and about wherever we where, you not going to starve :-) A Great Central Quiet Location Orphir with so many activities around to do We would return again without any hesitation.

Orphir is a small village and we didn't spend any time there but all the major sites on the Orkney mainland are within an easy drive. We ate in either Stromness or Kirkwall. Most of our time was spent going to the well known neolithic sites nearby but we also went to live folk music in Kirkwall at the Reel. If you stay in Orphir you need a car.

The Orkney Lodge is not in the village of Orphir but is just next to the Ferry terminal near Orphir.
Nothing to recommend it other than the good beds and the large room. The room had a strange set up with the sink in the room near the bed and not in the bathroom.
