The wagon has a lot of character and has been very lovingly equipped with everything you could possibly need, given the complete lack of plumbing and electricity! A unique stay and very memorable.

Lovely little Shepard's hut set on the hillside looking down towards the sea. Everything we needed was on hand, including a nice welcome pack complete with two half bottles of Merlot which went very nicely with the log fire and views out of the open door and out to sea. You have read that this is an off grid location so the compost toilet is what it is, if you are not up for that kind of thing, there are public loos just down the hill. Amazing walks on the beach, followed by a cosy night in front of the log burner fire, what more could you ask for.

Jennie, the host, thought of absolutely everything. The views are stunning and this little remote gem close to Durness even comes with an Eco toilet! Jennie’s husband is a fisherman and we got fresh prawns for dinner, delicious! The beach is so beautiful and the views keep on giving. It does get a little frosty at night, but the wagon comes with logs and lots of candles for the fireplace. Everything was very clean. We wished we stayed longer than one night. There’s lots of hikes and scenery around.

  • Do you have any power to run electric?
    No, there is no electricity at all at the wagon. There is no running water. There are battery powered lights though.

  • Hi there is there a bathroom?
    There is an outdoor “ compost toilet” in a wooden hut in the field twenty metres away from the wagon. This accommodation is completely off grid, so there is no flushing toilet, running water, shower or electricity. Thanks.

  • How can I get to the closest beach from the property?
    The closest beach, is Oldshoremore. It’s only a few minutes walk from the wagon. Leave the field, walk down the rest of the road towards the beach car park. Then follow the path up and round the graveyard. You will then reach the beach.

The wagon sits in a SSSI field over looking the stunning Oldshoremore beach , If you love adventure, being cut off from the rest of the world, and you don’t mind washing your body in the ocean or the stream, then the Eco Crofter’s Wagon is for you. You’ll go back to basics, and be completely “ off grid”. No electricity, no running water and no internet or phone! The wagon is warm, with the little wood burning stove and quality bedding. There’s a compost toilet in a hut outside the wagon in the field, and there’s a fire pit in the field overlooking the ocean. There’s basic cooking facilities, including pots and pans, plates and cutlery and a small easy to use gas camping stove. You may see highland cows, stags, eagles, Canadian geese or badgers during your stay. The beach is often completely empty, and is often known as being one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland. It is only a few minutes walk from the wagon. Parking is only available in the beach car park at the bottom of the road. There are public toilets there, and in Kinlochbervie 2 miles away, you’ll find a warm shower in the Harbour Office building. ( see photos for shower info)

The land is a protected wild habitat, full of wild flowers and different orchids. It also is home to the endangered Great Yellow Bumblebee. Viking King Hako once lived on this land! This is a typical rural highland Crofting hamlet. You are sure to witness both some modern and traditional Crofting practises whilst you are here. There’s an outstandingly beautiful beach at Oldshoremore, where it’s said the Vikings used to turn their boats. The rocks around are the oldest on this planet. The “Machair” habitat is rare and unique. There are rare orchids growing in the field around you and the endangered Great Yellow Bumblebee lives here too. The walk to Sandwood Bay is only a few miles along the road. Again, this is another beautiful beach, and can only be accessed on foot ( 4 mile walk- takes Aprox 2 hours) Smoo Cave is in Durness, and is a 40 minute drive away. Handa Island is a 20 minute drive away, where you can then access the island via a speedboat/ferry, which is bookable in advance. It’s an uninhabited island where Puffins live. It’s common to see sheep and Highlands cows wandering up the road here in Oldshoremore.There are also donkeys and Alpacas nearby.
