Nafplio or “Anapli” was the first capital of Greece. It is considered one of the most beautiful cities of the country, with its historical center emerging from a theatrical setting with every alley revealing a different part of its ageless history. Walking along the picturesque pathways to “Akronafplia”, the fish market and the “Palamidi” castle, taking the fish boat to the isle castle of “Bourtzi”, riding across town on the mini train, you can not have enough of the beautiful squares, the small streets tinted by the fuschia bougainvilleas and the old town houses of unfading charm. Myth has it, the city of Nafplion was founded by Nafplios, son of Poseidon and Amumon. Nafplios fortified the old city and built the castle, which he named after his son, Palamidis. Having being occupied by the Francs, the Venetians and the Turks along the years, Nafplio becomes the capital of the liberated Greek nation in 1823 and in early 1828, Ioannis Kapodistrias its first governor. Three years later he will be assassinated in front of the Saint Spyridon church, close to Aphroditi Pension.
