San Marcos is not for all travelers - lets get that out of the way. But there are groups of people that will upon arrival never ever want to leave. Spiritually minded people, those who really enjoy Yoga not as a sport or fitness regime but a way of life. Anyone into any form of ecstatic dance, shamanism, eco tourism or the like will discover in San Marcos a vibrant like-minded community and will never want to leave. The lake offers amazing views, a true spiritual center on this Earth and terrific vegetarian food options all over. DO NOT rent a car to come here, local transportation is by boats and TukTuk's, quite convenient infact. El Giardino and Emporium are terrific restaurants, as well as Lush.

San Marcos is a lovely tiny hippie town on Lake Atitlan, where you experience an interesting mix of foreigners and locals. If you are into yoga, buying natural local goodies, handmade jewelry, chilling, hiking, swimming in the lake and eating yummy plant based food, this is the place for you!

San Marcos is very quiet and the Reserva is beautiful for swimming. There are a lot of great spots to grab a drink or delicious food. It was perfect for spending the day reading, kayaking and swimming in the sun.

A perfect location with almost a private beach.

A perfect location with almost a private beach. It is more suitable for people who prefer loneliness as it is isolated from town and not too many people are around. I would recommend getting supplied with groceries as getting to town is a long uphill walk. In my opinion it is a bit overpriced compared to other location in San Marcos

San Marcos is beautiful and as a solo female traveler, found it to be quite safe. It has a wonderful no profit organization that helps empower local women, provides an after school program for children so they are not working on the street , and they also help feed the elderly. We as travelers are fortunate enough to visit these places, but for me it was nice to find a place I could give back to the community simply by purchasing a delicious lunch for $3.

    Beautiful restaurants. Low key atmosphere.

Beautiful restaurants. Low key atmosphere. It’s small so you’ll see some of the same things. But it has amazing gems all over. Yoga forest, eagles nest, and especially Las Pyramides were amazing spots. Too many good restaurants to try in two weeks. Most everything is walkable. And the trampoline is a must, even if you don’t do the 10 meter jump into Atitlan. 15Q for a beautiful spot to read, write, or swim.
