Great Warungs to eat local Indonesian food

Most visited places are too overrated, with crowds of tourists an nothing special to see. Ceking rice teracce was nothing magical - rice were cut, so all we could see was a bunch of tourists in a mud taking worthless activities (like a riding a bike on zip line). Tirta Empul temple was overcrowded as well, no magic and no sense of holiness (be aware of women selling bananas. First they give banana to try, but then say ‘pay pay pay’). One of the most popular waterfall Tegenungan was nice, but even there was litter all around.
Ubud is a place for shoping as there is a lot of shops, food markets, bazzars. Very simple to travel with Gojek. A lot of places to eat. Vegan The Zest has a good vibe.

I enjoyed getting away from the main streets down small lanes amongst the smaller communities. Also attended the open art studios weekend which was fabulous and a different opportunity being an artist myself. There is alot of art workshops and studios around Ubud. The temples and shrines a beautiful and away from the crazy main streets full of tourists there is alot to see. The museums and art galleries have beautiful, peaceful gardens a stunning art and history. They are often quiet but well worth the visit.

I am staying in Ubud for three weeks during my 2 month Bali travels. I've currently been here for 11 days and I feel like I've seen all the main sights, visited the best of the restaurants.
I would recommend 2 weeks tops in Ubud, but 10 days would be perfect.
Food & Drink
- The award for prettiest restaurant (and spa) goes to Clear Cafe. Absolutely stunning
- The food at Wild Vegan was lovely and it's so pretty at night
- The bakery about a 10 minute scooter ride away at 'Vegie Bakery and cafe WARMA' was lovely, with a fantastic chocolate babka!
- The coffee at Ubud.Space coworking was the best in the town!
Transport
- Download Grab and you have everything you need
- a Grab across town is about 12-15k (around 80p)
- I recommend getting your own scooter to explore the area better. You get used to the main busy roads very quickly.
Things to Do
- The Bali Zoo was really disappointing, don't bother
- Definitely go to the butterfly park, it was gorgeous
- The museum for masks and puppets was awesome and completely empty. I recommend for a rainy day or a down day
- Pyramids of Chi was a fun visit. I did the LSV event and recommend it as a 'when in Ubud' type of thing
- Do a Batik painting class with Nyoman Warta. It was great :)
5 star - Everything the property is so well run. Communication is amazing 24/7. Amazing local knowledge. Really warm kind loving family. Went above and beyond to help me when I was sick. Nursed me back to health. Just incredible people. Accommodation really keen modern and safe. Really recommend as you feel so happy to be in such safe hands here! Hotel manager is a beautiful lady who just wants you to have a great holiday. So efficient looks after all your needs. Replies so quickly on WhatsApp. The best! Thank you so much
The best hotel to spend your honey moon!
We went there as part of our honey moon trip and it was worthy. The friendly staff, the Restaurant, the food, the beautiful room and facilities made our stay perfect!!
We really enjoyed our stay there.
Peaceful and beautiful place 🤍 We want to go back
If it is your first time in Ubud, I recommend you staying at least 3-4 nights because like this you will have enough time to go sightseeing in Ubud and really enjoy the hotel (the private pool and rest of facilities)
Thanks
JAPA was the best hotel that I've ever experienced.
The location was perfect to enjoy excellent cafes, restaurants and yoga barn.
The private pool was wonderful and you can enjoy fabulous public swimming pool even you don't choose private pool villa.
Hotel staffs were very warming and they had perfect skill to make guests happy.
Also, I experienced very skillful massage and that was not expesive at all.
I bet you can't find more wonderful place in Ubud.
Thank JAPA for making my trip excellent.
The hotel itself and the location was great…surrounded by beautiful fields and greenery all around. It is a 30 minute ride on a motorbike from Ubud town so you can get the best of both worlds staying in this property…peace and relaxation in the hotel but also enjoy the busy town atmosphere with plenty of places to eat a short ride away. The staff were exceptionally good. They were so helpful and always went above and beyond to help us with anything. They made our stay so easy and comfortable.
Everything. From the cleanliness to the hospitality. IT WAS GREATT! We stayed there during the “Silent Day” and we did not get bored or annoyed.
1. The staff was super kind and helpful
2. We got the massage there - which was the best
3. We booked 2 more hotels in Ubud after Purana for a different experience, but none of them were even close to the service and cleanliness in Purana.
4. The location was super central near the market as well as the spas and restaurants.
this is one of our favorites!
the property is very well kept , with amazing jungle views , spacious and cleaned regularly day and night . infinity pool in the villa was the most beautiful in all of Bali .
the staff offered a 5 star hotel service , very personalized , always attentive and helpful to any request . very welcoming that we did not want to leave . we were really taken care of during our stay.
The villa with private pool was very nice and clean.
The view of the forest was magnificent.
The staff super kind and helpful.
You can hear just nature all around the hotel because is up the hill of Ubud
Free shuttle available to the Ubud Palace and center of the city
Breakfast was amazing, you can choose anything from the manu and the staff at the restaurant are extremely kind and accomodating.
The hotel represents a little oasis in the middle of the busy center of Ubud. My room in one of the wonderful villas of the hotel was so beautiful and comfortable and from my balcony I could enjoy the surrounding greenery and the sounds of nature. On top of it all, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, always a pleasure to see anyone there. I am definitely coming back for another stay.
The location of this hotel is ideal --walkable rating of 75+ and it is located near some of the best shopping and restaurants in Ubud -- however it is set back from the street a little bit and provides a quiet oasis when the main road is busy. Also the staff...bent over backwards to find ways to fix even the tiniest things...I appreciate the attention to detail and their listening ear!
The best you can stay in Ubud area. The breakfast is excellent and covers all tastes. The staff is polite and willing to serve you. The facilities are around the mountain and the river in the nature. The spa and the team are experts. We stayed two people in the villa with private pool and mountain view. I highly recommend it! Thanks for the perfect stay Royal Pita Maha !
Swimming in the wide private pool overlooking the jungle was one of the best moments in Bali. That was a perfect view. Sunset view was crazy!!! ❤️All staff was friendly and nice. We got room service everyday and all food were very delicious. We were impressed. The price of food was cheaper than another hotel in NUSA DUA but taste was much better :)
We stayed in 7 different hotels in Indonesia and this was definitely our favorite. The garden is otherwordly beautiful and the rooms spacious and even prettier than the pictures suggest. The bathroom was the best we have had in Indonesia. There is also a yoga space you can use. The location is right inside Ubud art market.
The host is really lovely, rooms are clean and nice. Location wise is also really good, you are near everything, but it is quiet and calm in that street. No wonder that some of the best hotels are nearby. Breakfast is also yummy.
With the cheap rates an absolute must to stay in!
Everything! Staff was very prepared and treated us excellent. The breakfast is awesome, amenities are all excellent too.
The pool area is beautiful, and private villas are like living in a dream!
One of the best hotels I've been!
Congratulations to all the staff!
The staying at the villa was amaising. Very comfortable room with private pool made our hollyday magical.Staff was very helpfull and polite. Also the location in the jungle but not far from the Ubud, very easy to get to the centre by bike or by car.
This 3 nights stay for our honeymoon was absolutely perfect. Our villa with private pool was stunning and the hotel is hôtel was really beautiful. Special mention to the staff which was amazing and always ready helpfup. Would come back for sure !
In the middle of Ubud, with plenty of restaurants, temples and lovely staff, this hotel offered the best accomodation of our trip in Thailand and Indonesia. Although I didn't use the pool, it looked nice. Room was comfortable and very clean.
Everything. The staff is amazing and the GM is super friendly. We book one more night at the last minute and we were lucky to be upgraded in the villa with private pool !!
Thank you Budi, you are the best
