Location was great to see attractions as well as groceries. We loved all the interesting old pieces that decorated the home along with the homemade crafts for sale. This is an old building that has been repurposed so it’s unique.

Slow Travel Mývatn uses the uniqueness of the region, its culture, history, and traditions to offer our guests a calm, decelerated and mindful stay. We stand for environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism in harmony with nature and the people living in the region. Óli´s Homestay, our former home is an old, cosy and lovely little wooden house with a soul. It is located on the outskirts of the village Reykjahlið. The family pictures on the walls, the cracking of the floor, traditional objects related to family life and our craftsmanship tell stories from the past. They give this house its special charm. Our guests have access to the whole house, including entrance area, 2 bedrooms (each equipped with 2 single beds), kitchen- and dining area, living room and bathroom with toilet, shower and sink. All natural wonders, numerous day tours, guided adventure services, the Nature Bath, an interesting hiking/biking network, infrastructure and several services complete a unique and memorable stay in our accommodation. A simple and charming accommodation for up to 4 travellers who value silence, rest and relaxation after an eventful day in the midst of unique nature.
About us: Óli was born and raised here in Mývatn, Iceland. His childhood was simply yet educational and full of adventures on their farm. His parents, relatives and ancestors passed on their knowledge about the surrounding nature, life at the lake and it´s traditions, to him. Oli's education as a landscaper and many years as a tour and travel guide are further important milestones for his current way of life. His interest in people, cultures and traditions made him decide to share his knowledge with his guests: learning from each other and living together. Bianca was born and raised in Austria. The Tyrolean mountains and forests have been her playground since childhood, where she experienced the greatest adventures. As an adult Bianca have climbed mountains, seen the wideness, felt the freedom, sensed life. She became increasingly interested in the use of plants and herbs from the area. She taught herself the craft with a wide variety of natural materials. Bianca owe this special connection to nature and the sustainable use of it to her grandfather. Thanks to her trip to Iceland, she is now the partner of a wonderful man, a kindergarten teacher, an handicraft artist and a host.
All natural wonders, like the volcanically active region of Krafla with its blast craters Víti and Leirhnjúkur, Hverir geothermal area, Hverfell blast crater, Grjótagjá and Stóragjá caves with its hot thermal water, Dimmuborgir troll garden, pseudo craters in Skútustaðir, Vindbelgur and Hliðarfjall mountain tracks, Höfði and Kálfaströnd are reachable within 15 minutes by car. There are numerous other excursions and day destinations in the immediate vicinity. Dettifoss, Selfoss, Hafragílsfoss, Ásbyrgi, Goðafoss, Aldeyarfoss, Húsavik and Akureyri are just a few of the many worthwhile natural beauties around Mývatn. The region around Mývatn has a good hiking and cycling network with different levels. Our guests will recieve more detailed information about this during their stay. Guided tours to the icecave Lofthellir or Askja crater in the highlands, snowmobile and huski tours, horseback riding and bike tours are also organized by various providers all year round. During the winter a small ski lift is open at Krafla vulcano. It is run by the regional sportsclub. The small ski area is a welcome offer, especially for the kids. The Nature Bath is also in the immediate vicinity. A perfect place to switch off and relax. In the village of Reykjahlíð and around the lake is a grocery store, pharmacy, medical facility, gas station, post office, bank. car repair shop, local handicraft shop, bars and restaurants and a children´s playground. The information center is on the south side of the lake. In addition, there is a local sports center with several amenities and programs available. A schedule and price list can be made available upon request. Sigurgeir's Bird museum is a unique and private colletion of 280 Icelandic birds and eggs. Included is also a small heritage exhibition.
