Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the northwest. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city center are Roman theater remains, with columns from the Roman forum standing next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square hosts some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Water sports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffeehouses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodations include hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.

Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture, good shopping, and plenty of excellent places to wine and dine. Public transport is very accessible for anyone wanting a day trip, perhaps if the weather is not cooperating, and it's very easy to hop on the train to visit Venice for a few hours, or to take a bus trip to Slovenia for the day. Trieste is very high on my list of places to return to as often as possible.

Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting.
Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting. There are loads to see in the area and you can also visit Croatia, Slovenia, as they are very close. It is easy to go from A to B with public transport (although I found the ticket system far too overcomplicated and be prepared that unless you speak / read Italian you will be a bit lost). Driving is not really recommended for inexperienced drivers as the roads are super steep and most of them are narrow. I would not visit the city with small kids in a buggy, because it can be very frustrating to push a buggy on these narrow / steep streets, but if your kids are older than 6-8 and can walk a lot, it is a great area to explore.

Trieste is a kind and adorable town...not entirely Italian nor Austrian...people are very polite. Everything is close by - the sea, the small mountains (beautiful views from the castle on top of the hill).

Beautiful city on the Adriatic with lots of interesting restaurants and cafes. We only had a night but could have spent the weekend exploring and enjoying all the city has to offer. The sunset was beautiful over the sea.

A beautiful coastal city, with fantastic facades and beautiful promenades and squares. Close to good beaches and places worth visiting. An excellent starting point for visiting Venice, Istria, Slovenia... Excellent food in restaurants, which are very affordable (20-50 EUR per person). House wines cost 7 EUR for half a liter, and they are excellent. Extremely well stocked stores.

We (2 adults and our 10-years old daughter) spent a night in the hotel, visiting Trieste on our way from home from Tuscany. It is positioned near the most picturesque part of the downtown and the harbor. The room was clean, spacious, and well equipped. The staff is kind and helpful. Parking places are available on the street for fee or garages are available in the surrounding area. The hotel offers a convenient drop and pick-up service for 20 Euro (we haven't tried it). We had a good breakfast.
Smart rooms is perfectly located in the center of Trieste. The staff was always available and helped us when we needed information and to store our luggage the day of checkout. During summer they provide a nice basic breakfast which helps start the day with the right foot. We had a room with shared bathroom and there was always an available bathroom when we needed it. The bathroom is big and comfortable. The room had a desk and the wifi speed was remarkably fast - a rarity on budget hotels.
Amazing view of the sea directly from your room
Balcony with almost as much space as the room itself
Very attentive and helpful staff always eager to help
Breakfast of high quality, high hygiene in COVID-terms and also a wonderful room
This hotel is in an amazing location right by the sea... doesn't get much better
What a great choice for a vacation in Trieste where you don't just want to be by the city
First of all, he is the best host ever!! We saved money because he helped us with parking, where to eat, how to go on excursions! The best location in Trieste, right in the center and in a quiet street, real Italy! The apartment has everything you need, clean and comfortable.
The next time I visit Trieste, I will go straight to this apartment! Everything was wonderful and beyond expectations!
Perfect location, charming, clean, comfortable, nice staff. Definitely recommend this place and if we go back to Triest will stay there again! We’re lucky and parked our car on the street in front of the hotel (no payment was needed), but anyway if there is no free space, the public parking is very close to the place and the price is ok 10€/24h (it’s just about 4-5 min walking distance).
Great on room furnishings and fittings, bed quality and bathroom amenities. Yet the room felt like it was stuck at the bottom of an elevator shaft. No natural light nor the ability to really feel comfortable about opening the doors for fresh air.
More a glorified cleaning cupboard space than a boutique hotel room
Staff were great tho and it’s a mostly handy location
We were in Trieste to visit with local friends and this hotel was a good choice for our stay. Well located in the center of town with lots of shops, restaurants and services nearby. Valet parking was a plus. And the a la carte breakfast was top drawer. The suite was enormous and well appointed. We were so pleased with everything about our stay at the Palace Suite.
I like very much this hotel! I have been another times and I would like to go in every time there in the future!
This hotel have a very good location in Trieste, in fronte of the beach and near the most popular place in the center of the city. Very good and spacious room with big and bright toilet, friendly staff with very good service.
Hotel Solun is a lovely boutique hotel in central Treiste. Staff and friendly, welcoming and helpfull. The rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished and decorated. It has a lift essential for heavy suitcases.Great breakfast with changes each day. Less tha 10 minute walk to station, shops and port. Many restaurants close by.
Everyting was wonderful, the staff, the lobby, the room, the bathroom, the food.
Everything.
I could come with the car in front of the building to get the luggages faster.
There was parkins spaces like 100 m away from the accomodation and it was perfect for us.
I will sure come again if i will have to pass through Trieste.
Location is great, in walking distance from Trieste Centrale (main train station with fast and convenient airport connections), the city center and the cruise terminal. Breakfast arrangement (a la carte) was quite unusual but food was of decent quality.
We love this hotel! It's outside the big city of Trieste and close to the sea. Breakfast was great, dinner even better, and the staff was just excellent. The view could have been better, but we knew that we only had partial view to the sea.
It was my first time staying at B&B Hotel Trieste and I enjoyed it. The location is very close to the central station (5 min of walk). The room is spacious, modern, comfortable, and clean. The staffs are nice. The breakfast is good
Welcoming people is so cautious and friendly. Bedrooms are very well equipped and comfortable. The hotel has a perfect location to visit the historical center of Trieste. Fully recommended!!
The apartment was spacious and had all the amenities for self catering. It’s location was excellent for Trieste city sights and very walkable to our cruise ship location.
