Vacation Home Il Rifugio
Via Campanina Ogliastro Cilento, Agropoli, 84043 Agropoli, Italy –
Dawn and Nigel
Located near the Cilento coast of south western Italy, The Pinelli Estate nestles amongst vineyards, olive groves and sun-kissed pines. The scent of oranges and lemons mingles with the clean valley air .Known for its stunning ancient ruins, dramatic coastline and dazzling deep blue sea, this region is famous for the bays of Naples and Salerno and the iconic chic of the Amalfi coast. The jewel-like attractions of Capri, Sorrento, Pompei, Mount Vesuvius Paestum, Positano and Caserta pepper the coastline. IL RIFUGIO is a four en-suite bedroomed villa featuring a cool lounge, hall, state of the art kitchen and decadent dining room. Step outside to over 150m2 of immaculate private terracing and the infinity pool. Whilst all of the bedroom areas are fully air conditioned, the lower floors benefit from the natural coolness of exaggeratedly thick walls and the partial underground rear foundations.
As with many translations, some things can be lost along the way. A little of that happens when you literally translate the Italian ‘Magari’. It is probably closest to ‘Maybe’, but also chimes with ‘If only’ or perhaps “I wish’. It was our inspiration for The Pinelli Estate. We thought ‘why maybe’? Let’s make this happen. We were enchanted from the moment we descended the drive . The Pinelli name can be traced to the region around the city of Bologna. Our distinctive heraldry dates from the feudal states of the Roman Empire. Loaded with symbolism (the use of six elements echoes the sides of a cube and the points of the Star of David), the striking Pineapples are a visual pun of the name. In fact, the Pinelli name has many name derivatives – Pinon, Pino, Panetta and Pineda to name but a few – but each one reflects the pine link. Traditionally, when used with red, the heraldic crest oozes the sentiments of patriotism and charity. Nobly, it also represents one who is ‘obliged to right wrongs’. Whilst it helps to define The Pinelli Estate crest, there is clearly no wrong to be righted here. And quite why the Pineapples are upside down is anybody’s guess, but we love it
During your stay with us at Il Rifugio the only challenge we foresee for you is being spoilt for choice. From the splendour and romanticism of the incredible Amalfi Coast to the bustle and history of Naples. Nearby is the awesome catastrophe of the living museum of Pompeii and Heraculeum, as well as Paestum and its history of over 2500 years. You will also find secluded mountain villages and many breathtaking views and discoveries like Matera – but the list is almost endless. Much of the area is covered by the Cilento national park - the second largest in Italy - and it boasts 100km of coastline and a wild, mountainous interior sprinkled with historic villages still wedded to a traditional way of life. This is where ordinary Neapolitans escape to in the summer and is still largely off the tourist radar, granted little more than a passing mention in most guidebooks. You could spend your days clinging to the coast, swimming in some of the clearest water I've ever seen, dining at lovely waterfront restaurants and wandering around charming fishing villages. Even those only vaguely interested in history shouldn't miss out on Cilento's impressive historic sites.
