A unique city with a long and interesting history.
A unique city with a long and interesting history. Parts of the old city are still being renovated. The ancient cave structures that have been transformed into modern hotels, restaurants, shops and bars are worth seeing. Tourists are not allowed to bring cars into the old city and parking outside can be tricky. Also, there are a lot of steps and uneven pavement so comfortable shoes are a must. Not very accessible for those who have mobility issues.

We loved our Ape Tour of the city.
We loved our Ape Tour of the city. As seniors, we were not able to walk the hills and steps so the tour was a great overview of the history. Beautiful, historic city! Glad we got here.. then had to go to our next hotel and watch the James Bond movie that was filmed there!

Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago! Matera is the oldest continuously lived-in-settlements... in the World! Our yellow-washed stone house had a balcony to enjoy our cappuccino & roof-top terrace to gaze at the stars. It alone was another jewel of an experience. The town makes you feel as though you are a witness to Biblical times. You've seen it featured in Mel Gibson's "Passion of Christ" & Bond 007's "No Time to Die".

Matera is a step back in time.
Matera is a step back in time. The old town is built around the original old town, Sassi. Very easy to get around even tho it looks like a lot of stairs and ups and downs. Food great, people friendly. The local bread is amazing. Home made pasta in many restaurants is amazing.

A fantastic historic and mainly unspoiled place, great for just wandering around and taking in the atmosphere. Pretty hilly everywhere which we loved but not for everyone. Good walking shoes are a bonus as the worn stone you find everywhere can be a little slippy when going down hill or if it rains.
Unlike almost every other historic location in is not ruined by cars and traffic! Well, not yet. The weather in mid October was a dry 30 degrees at noon, it would be too hot for me in July but it was perfect for sight seeing and walking everywhere.
Beautiful hotel in one of the most spectacular locations in the town. Views from the hotel were stunning, especially from the restaurant/bar upstairs. The family running the place was so kind. I had a bad accident in Matera due to a fall and they went above and beyond to help us during the slightly challenging time - including personally picking us up late at night from the ER because taxi service was not available. A big thanks to Antonella and her mom for the hospitality and kindness.
The apartment is as you see in the photos, everything clean and very comfortable beds. Good breakfast is provided; varied juices, milk, coffee, fresh fruit, toasts and yogurts, much better than most hotels in Italy. The location is top as you are right in the centre. And the host goes far and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, from explaining a bit of history about Matera to providing a complementary bottle of wine. 100% recommend to stay here.
Small hotel, practically situated on the fringe of Sassi Caveoso and therefore easy to park the car. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast is served on a nicely situated terrace with stunning view of the town. Great for aperitif in the evening. For dinner, I heartily recommend Soul Kitchen, exceptional Ribeye (Podolica) and Pannacotta with orange infused olive oil. Make sure you take a guided walking tour to really get to know Matera.
My 2 friends and I stayed in the room with 4 double beds and 2 bathrooms. It was a very large room and had curtains between beds to give us some privacy. Location is great. DO pack a light bag as you have to carry your luggage quite a ways through town where no cars are allowed and Matera has lots of stairs. Wonderful view from the hotel. Unique experience to stay in a cave room. Owner Maria Theresa was a delight and so helpful.
this property was beyond exceptional. It had the absolute best for you in Matera, whilst also staying in a cave. it is a family run hotel, and they are all very friendly and helpful, they booked our tour of the city as well as dinner at a local restaurant both at the last minute. The location in Caveoso is unbeatable and breakfast was also well above expectations for a hotel. Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough.
We loved this hotel. It e as centrally located and a perfect base for exploring the fascinating town of Matera. Our room was in one of the cave dwellings and offered a totally unique stay with all the modern facilities of a super clean room, fantastic shower and very comfortable bed. The buffet style breakfast had a great variety of quality local produce and all members of staff were delightful.
Cozy hotel with a perfect location to explore the beauty of Matera. The room was spacious and clean. Extremely friendly staff that went the extra mile to give us suggestions and tips for our stay. The hotel cannot be reached by car, but it's only a 10 min walk from on-street free parking. Wifi wasn't working, but we were offered to connect to the staff's network as backup. Good breakfast.
This is a really special place to stay. Yes it does not have all mod cons, but that is the point. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel service, go somewhere else. If you are looking for a great experience and night in one of the old Matera caves, look no further. Great location in fascinating Matera. Breakfast was a magnificent spread. Would heartily recommend this hotel.
We visited Matera as part of a road trip along Amalfi and around Puglia. This was one of my favourite hotels and one night wasn’t long enough!
The rooms are very well done, the setting is stunning, the pool is lovely, and breakfast was great.
A very very peaceful and rustic luxury-feeling stay that offered great value for money!
The location was excellent and with a true "cave" feel. Friendly staff, nicely decorated and clean! We even had a gentleman making souvenirs on our doorstep!
Just a warning about steps - no problem for us, but could be difficult if you have heavy luggage. Matera is steps everywhere though, so cannot fault this hotel!
The VIEW!!! This is my 3rd visit to Matera and this is the best hotel I stayed. The staffs are so kind and helpful in every way. The rooms and bathrooms were super clean and comfy. The breakfast in the balcony with a view is just healing and relaxing. We will definitely come back here for our next visit.
This hotel's location was "prime". The staff was friendly and helpful with anything we needed. The breakfast spread was fresh with something for everyone's taste. The cappuccino was first-rate. Our room was comfortable and clean. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Matera.
the hotel is just in the middle of the Matera. very nicely decorated room has everything you need. Great breakfas in the morning with a fascinating piano recital from owner. Super staff, recommended also a very good restaurant nearby. Would definetely stay one more time if come back.
This used to an high school which got converted to a hotel. It's weird and something you don't expect a hotel to look like. The location is great, only 500 meters from the old city of Matera so no parking issues are required.
The view of Matera from the terrace just below the hotel was spectacular!
The lady managing the breakfast was very professional, pleasant & kind.
Staying in a cave room was a once in a lifetime experience. Very nice!
Stylish and modern boutique hotel room, small balcony with a view, beautiful bathroom with a large shower, rooftop terrace with a view, good breakfast, good location to walk around Matera, great service in the reception
Very interestingly designed hotel scattered amongst different former "caves".
We had a standard room which was rather small
Small spa area and very limited access
Good breakfast
Very, very helpful staff
The hotel us beautiful, the view is one of the best in Matera.
Staff very nice and helpful.
Room super clean, beautifully decorated and very special, as they are actually in a sassi (cave)
attentiveness to tourist needs, centrally located, cleanliness, refilled refrigerator with plenty of healthy food. Hospital staff. I highly recommend Hotel San Giorgio if staying in Matera
This was ideally located to explore Matera’s Sassi. The staff were very friendly. The hotel was very comfortable. Because it is based around the caves, it is very atmospheric.
