Chatan is an ideal location for people visiting family members in the military. It's very close to most of the bases, and has a wide selection of hotels. There is public transportation, but It's very walkable (in most areas). We felt very safe walking around. The America Village there has lots of shops, restaurants and bars. If you're staying at the hostel, you can use the cafe as a lounge/working space. The location was great too- convenient stores and a huge supermarket just around the corner. Many restaurants, nail salons too. You can walk along the beach to enjoy the sunset, or even walk for 15-20 min to American Village. Last but not least, the coffee was amazing.
