I really liked Otaru, even though it is small and doesn’t have too much to see. It’s really just the main shopping strip and the canal. There are a few museums and some spots in the mountains (there seems to be a ropeway that is poorly advertised but would have been perfect) but that’s about it.
It’s really quite a charming place. The streetscape and history are both fascinating, and the food great - especially ankake yakisoba and kaisendon. I do think it would be an absolutely perfect place to end a trip and unwind for a few days before returning to reality.

A lovely old port town with many original buildings being repurposed for tourism - dining and glass making.
Compact size makes walking around easy but in winter could be snow bound.
Lots of great places to explore old Japanese culture and dining and drinking experiences.
Lots of fresh seafood...many diners around the actual fish market shop with all types of Japanese cuisine... tempura...sakitori...sushi..shashimi...hotpot ...ramen etc..and absolutely amazing bakeries / patisseries and local ice cream and dairy products. Even wineries have opened up.
And even more if you are a winter sports person with ski resorts on the town outskirts...seaon just closed when we were here.
All this a simple train ride from Sapporo Airport -- ok maybe an 2 hour ride...not bad if straight off the plane from Sydney or Seoul or Tokyo into the Sapporo airport.

After coming from the big city of Sapporo we loved the smaller town of Otaru. Planned on just doing a day trip but changed to stay overnight. Wish we had taken a day off Sapporo and added it to Otaru. No lights on the canal as expected but we still loved Otaru. Easy to walk to everything and a lot to enjoy.

We went during winter.
We went during winter. It is a small quiet town and most shops close around 5-6pm. So good to settle dinner early. As a small and quiet town, the place is generally quiet and peaceful after dusk. There is nothing to do after dusk and travelers can take a stroll down the Otaru canal and enjoy the night view.

Give the canal a pass, especially if you have been to Europe. Very underwhelming. Take the local train one stop to Shioya and hike the Shioya Maru-yama. It is about a 6km round trip hike up a local mountain with great views. Take the same train to Yoichi to tour the Nikka Whiskey Distillery and sample great whiskeys in the restaurant after the tour (book reservation for tour ahead of time and remember everything shuts down around 16:00).

The hotel: Great location, staff service facilities and everything you need to support your comfortable stay, a little cosy but expected in the country.
The town is lovely and has now become my most favourite town in Japan, want to be here more, it give me relax, local people are also very nice.
*The Owner staff was really accommodating and friendly.
*They have a free shuttle service from the time of your check in date. The staff will meet you from the Otaru station.Very convenient for new travelers.
*The staff also gave me a quick tour of the different Tourist Attractions within the area. The staff even gave me recommendations to what places that I should try to visit.
*The Hotel is very near to Mt. Tengu. The location is very accessible for those who want to try the Tengu Ropeway, Ski etc.
This hotel is near the Otaru-Chikkō Station. You must make a right turn as you exit the station and get into the mall entrance, which is on the second floor. The mall is open around 10.30 to 22.30. The hotel reception is on the first floor. Find an escalator to the first floor to the hotel. I recommend everyone to stay at this hotel. Buffet is excellent. I and my wife love it. The staff is very friendly. Restaurants and supermarkets are easy to find.
There is something very special about this place. It brought me so much peace. Two kind gentlemen run the hotel. It was quiet when I stayed, not many guests. I wished I’d booked another night. Hearing the ocean lap against the shore, clean rooms and everything felt new. I feel lucky to have experienced this place. I went by car. Otaru is close but if you don’t like being in the heart of a city, this place is a gem!
The hotel’s European historical-style furnishing integrates it well into Otaru’s canals and historical trading facilities.
Central location. Directly beside the canal and within walking distance to most museums, galleries and handicraft shops.
I highly encourage all visitors to have at least one breakfast at the hotel. Good ambiance and good food.
We stayed here for 2 nights in November 2023. Well located hotel and walking distances to Otaru restaurants, just opposite the convenient stores Lawson, walk about 10 mins to attraction points Otaru Canal and shopping street.. Rooms are clean and big enought. Staffs are very polite and professional, onsite parking is convenient.
We loved our stay, the owner is amazing and caring. Everything was clean, comfortable and friendly. The location is right in Otaru town, easy to walk anywhere and a couple steps from a train. The breakfast and coffee is excellent, a perfect way to start your day. Plum House has a 'home' vibe in it's charming Japanese style.
Breakfast buffet had a good mix of Japanese and Western choices. The room was very clean and warm, with an ensuite bathroom (Note that while we booked Garden House, we actually got a room in Plum House, the newer building). There's also public onsens for hotel guests, though we didn't use them.
The best part of the hotel is the view of the canal. If looking for a hotel in Otaru, you should definitely check out Hotel Sonia. Good access to the shopping street and lots of good restaurants close by. The hotel was a little rustic in parts but it added to the charm.
The location is great, located in between the station and all Otaru attractions. Lot's of good restaurants and convenience stores are a short walk away. The rooms are clean. The common sitting area is the highlight.
Great staff, especially the parking attendants. The room is dated, but comfortable and quite spacious for a Japanese hotel. Breakfast and onsen were better than expected, as noted by other guests.
My 2nd stay here, the price is reasonable and the hotel is accessible and convenience. The only thing i like to add that one of the room lighting is a little dim compare to the other 3 rooms.
1. Staff is perfect. Always smiling and happy to help.
2. Also the location is perfect. Nearby Otaru canal, easy to reach the Otaru JR station.
3. Free coffee machine with aromatic coffee
Loved the hotel lobby and breakfast. Also enjoyed the deep bathtub. The location is easily walkable from the JR station. Beautiful views of the canal and old buildings.
