Big fluffy futon blankets and heated table blanket, very cozy in winter. The staff are so helpful and friendly, made the stay very pleasant

Adele Australia

This is not your typical ryoken or hotel. It is a monastery that is built on a very traditional Japanese design and is traditional in every way. So--no view from the room, though beautiful gardens you can see from the hallways. Bath is tattoo-friendly. And the meals are utterly amazing. But the experience is more like moving back in time to the mid/late 19th Cent. upper class life style in Japan--very authentic but not at all modern. We loved it, but many people might not. But OMG the food! More than we could possibly eat, and so delicious and so many different dishes. Everything is vegan and each dish is unique. The only repeats (dinner and breakfast) are rice and tea. Worth it for the food alone!

An amazing place! We loved our time here. The service was fantastic, and the staff spoke excellent English. They were so thoughtful and kind, and we were very comfortable. The food was delicious, and the morning service was such a cool experience. I wish we could have stayed longer. I hope to come back again someday.

Meredith United States of America

The food is amazing and the temple is absolutely beautiful. The heating is strong enough to keep the room comfortable even sleeping in tatamis. The morning ceremony was a great ending to the whole experience.

Of our three weeks in Japan, this was our favorite place to stay. A once in a lifetime experience. Amazing food. Beautiful onsen. Attending the service in the morning was an added treat. Will definitely come back next time we are in Japan.

Madison United States of America

The breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the location is very convenient to everything you'll want to see in Koya, either by walking or city bus. If you're like me and your body has taken it's licks over the years sleeping on one futon pad can be a little hard, but if you ask the staff will gladly put down an extra pad or two for you. The best part of our stay was the morning prayers!

Jeffrey United States of America

Very friendly staff. One staff member even helped us plan for our next destination in Japan and booked a bus ticket for us. Great traditional room with view on the garden and yukata's to wear around the property. Delicious dinner and breakfast. Relaxing onsen. Practically unlimited tea.

Rosa456 Netherlands

Beautiful property and an ideal location in the middle of Koyasan! The staff was very kind and we loved dinner and breakfast - all vegetarian.

Elisabeth United States of America

We loved the room, the food and the treatment from the staff

Hila Israel

The temple was gorgeous both inside and out. The room was spacious, the gardens were beautiful, and the food was excellent.

This property is a ryokan, which is a type of traditional Japanese Inn. Learn more

  • What's a ryokan?
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn. They usually feature bathhouses, multicourse dinners, communal spaces where guests can relax, and rooms with woven-straw flooring and futon mats. Like hotels, a range of ryokans (from budget to luxury) is available. What originated centuries ago as a free rest house for long-distance travelers has evolved into a popular destination for relaxation surrounded by therapeutic mineral springs.
  • What are the big differences between a ryokan and a hotel?
Unlike a hotel, where the guest room is just a place to turn in for the night, a ryokan is more than just a place to sleep. In Japan, many travelers journey long distances to relax in a hot spring bath and feast on a traditional multicourse dinner – staying in a ryokan is an experience in and of itself. These ryokans typically have Japanese-style rooms with woven-straw floors and futon beds (no Western beds and carpeting). You should also remove your shoes at the entrance of the room, or before you enter it. Modern ryokans might serve buffet-style meals in a dining area, while more traditional ryokans tend to serve in-room dinners. Some ryokan rooms have a private bathroom, and others might just have a shared bathroom.
  • What's a kaiseki meal?
Kaiseki is the culinary highlight at a ryokan, embodying beautifully presented dishes that delight both the palate and the eyes. Every one of the 10 to 15 dishes that make up the multicourse Japanese dinner is prepared in a way that highlights the unique textures, colors, and flavors of featured seasonal ingredients and local specialties. Most commonly served at special restaurants and ryokans, a traditional kaiseki dinner usually consists of bite-size appetizers, fresh sashimi (raw fish, like sushi), soup, grilled fish or meat, a hot-pot dish, rice with miso soup, and a small dessert.
  • What's a yukata?
A yukata is a casual summer kimono or robe, typically made of light cotton. Many ryokans provide guests with yukata robes during their stay. In some areas, it's common to see guests strolling through the neighborhood in their yukatas. The loose-fitting garment is perfect for sleeping and relaxing in.
  • How should I wear a yukata?
First, put your arms through the sleeves like you would with a robe. Take the right side of the yukata and wrap it across your body. Then, take the left side and wrap it over the right, making sure that the robe is level at your ankles. Pinning the yukata closed on the right side, wrap the sash around your waist a couple of times and then tie a bow. Generally, the bow is tied around the waist for women, and the hips for men.
  • What's a Japanese hot spring (onsen)?
Onsen (literally "hot spring") is a term often used to refer to both the mineral-rich hot springs and the bathing facilities that house them. Whether the bath is public or private, gender-segregated or mixed, indoor or outdoor, soaking and unwinding in the soothing geothermal waters at an onsen is a millennia-old custom deeply embedded in Japanese culture.
  • What's standard bathing etiquette?
At a bathhouse—onsen or not—guests are expected to remove all clothing in their respective changing rooms before entering the bathing area. As a common courtesy, once inside the bathing area, guests should wash and rinse their bodies thoroughly before quietly stepping into the hot water. Whether you relax in solitude or converse softly with others is up to you, but guests should always be mindful of others. Wash towels are often used to cover one’s private areas while walking around. However, note that you should not put towels in the water.
  • Why are tattoos not allowed?
While tattoos have become more popular among Japan's youth, many Japanese people still associate them with outlaws and organized crime. Nowadays, not all businesses ban customers with tattoos, but you might still be refused admission to bathhouses and swimming pools. Small tattoos can be covered up using waterproof bandaids, but keep in mind that each property has the final say on what’s acceptable.

Couples in particular like the location – they rated it 9.6 for a two-person trip.

  • Is the room heated during winter? How cold is it in end Nov?

Hello, Koyasan is very very cold place. Located at top of the mountain (900 meters high), temperature is 10 degrees colder than Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and other near cities. In the end of Nov. temperature will be 5 degees to 0 degrees. Also our building is over hundreds years and authentic building made of just wood and paper, therefore NOT insulated. So we recommend to bring warm cloth with you. But we hope you enjoy our temple, maybe sometimes not so convenient like in the big city, and feel something different from other touristic accommodations. Anyway, we are very looking forward to seeing you then. Warmest regards,

Hello, Thank you for your inquiry. Also, our meals at temple are "Syojin Cuisine", which was originally made as a special kind of vegetarian dish for buddhist monks. It's without any meat, fish, egg, dairy nor strong taste's vegetables such as garlic, onion, nor leeks. • 1

      It starts with a booking

      It starts with a booking

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

      Followed by a trip

      Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

    • 3

      And finally, a review

      And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.
