Kakegawa town is charming although very quiet when we were there. Townsfolk we encountered were friendly and welcoming. Strolling down the main streets is like visiting another era with its war or pre-war era structures, sidewalk embellishments and building signage and posters. Visitors who enjoy history and a slower pace would appreciate Kakegawa for the hidden gem it is. What drew us in is the castle and the bird park. Both fulfilled our expectations and then some. Although geared toward children, adults would enjoy the bird park, too. We ate at an Italian restaurant, トラットリア・バラクーダ(TRATTORIA・Barracuda), which at first did not seem like it had much to offer, but with tasty locally sourced ingredients and the excellent view of the castle, we enjoyed every savory bite. Kakegawa is a wonderful stop on the way to Kyoto via Shinkansen.
