Mount Koya (Koyasan) is one of the most sacred places in Japan—home to Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, founded over 1,200 years ago by the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Surrounded by forested peaks and steeped in ritual and silence, Koyasan is a place of deep reflection—not only for Buddhists, but for all who seek stillness, beauty, and meaning. In 2012, we opened Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU as the first guesthouse in Koyasan. Our vision was simple: to create a space where modern-day pilgrims and travelers from around the world could stay in comfort—without losing the spirit of this sacred mountain. KOKUU means "vast empty space" in Buddhism. But this emptiness is not void—it is potential. Our capsule-style rooms are minimalist yet warm, designed to give you rest, privacy, and quiet moments to reconnect—with yourself, with nature, and with this very special place. Guests often describe KOKUU as calm, cozy, and perfectly located—just a short walk from Okunoin Cemetery, morning prayers, and the many temples of Koyasan. Whether you're joining a fire ritual, wandering lantern-lit paths, or simply enjoying our homemade curry or peaceful music lounge, we hope KOKUU becomes your home on the mountain. We’re always happy to share local tips, walking routes, and spiritual highlights. More than anything, we want your stay in Koyasan to be peaceful, meaningful, and unforgettable.
Hi, I’m Ryochi, your host and founder of Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU. Born into a family of Shingon monks, I created KOKUU in 2012 to be more than just a place to sleep. It’s a peaceful base for reflection, connection, and deep rest—set right beside Koyasan’s magical, lantern-lit Okunoin cemetery. Guests call KOKUU “relaxed,” “cozy,” “amazing,” and “perfectly located.” From minimalist capsule-style pods and delicious curry dinners, to warm conversations and early-morning prayer walks, everything here is designed to help you slow down and truly feel Koyasan. I love music, hiking, and sharing this sacred place with guests from around the world. Whether you’re here for silence or stories, I’ll do my best to make your stay unforgettable. KOKUU is simple, but full of soul. Just like Koyasan.
Sacred Experiences Around KOKUU Staying at Koyasan Guesthouse KOKUU means being just steps from Okunoin Cemetery, the most sacred site in Koyasan. This gives you direct access to some of the most profound experiences Mount Koya has to offer. 🌌 Okunoin & Morning Prayer Wander mossy paths through thousands of lanterns at Okunoin—Japan’s largest cemetery. Join morning prayers at Torodo Hall from 6:00 to 7:00 AM. No transport needed—you can walk from your bed to the temple. 🕯 Okunoin Night Walk At night, Okunoin becomes a magical, lantern-lit world. Join a guided tour or explore quietly on your own. Most guests say this is the highlight of their stay. 🔥 Goma Fire Ritual Held daily from 13:00 to 14:30 at Shojo Shin-in Temple, this sacred fire ceremony is open to everyone. Watch as prayers are offered through flames to purify the heart and mind. 🥗 Shojin Ryori Koyasan is famous for Shojin Ryori, Buddhist vegetarian cuisine that’s healthy, balanced, and deeply symbolic. We’ll recommend great local spots where you can try it. 🧘 Meditation at Ekoin Join a peaceful 30-minute meditation session at Ekoin Temple at 16:30 each day (2,000 yen, no reservation needed). Calm your mind in a sacred space. 🕊 Jukai – Taking the Precepts A profound ritual where you formally commit to the Buddhist path. Ask us or inquire at a local temple to participate. ✍️ Sutra Copying Try hand-copying Buddhist scriptures, a quiet and meditative activity available at nearby temples. We’ll show you where to go. 🌲 Nature Walks Explore beautiful pilgrimage trails like Nyonin-michi (Women’s Path) and Choishi-michi, the historic 23.5 km approach lined with stone markers. Let Koyasan speak to you—through silence, ritual, nature, and presence. And let KOKUU be your quiet base for the journey.
