Kyoto is the old capital of Japan and was one of the few cities spared during WWII. Therefore it is a must visit for the culture and experience. There is so much to see and do that one should pick a few daily hi-lites like bamboo forest, Fushimi, Gion, Philosopher path which leads to many temples (pick one for deep explore) and the market. I recommend staying near the center (Nishi market). The transportation system is excellent and on time. The city is deceptively big, so will need buses and subway to get around. But certainly, get out and walk and enjoy the restaurants which are all good. For runners there are a few miles of trails along "duck" water.

Most beloved city in Japan!
Most beloved city in Japan! Calm and mysterious antique atmosphere guides me to the back to the 9 C-15 Century. Temple garden, in particular, Eungaksa, Eikando-jo are two top lists for me. Transportation including Saga line, Nara line is very charming to attractive suburb points.

Kyoto is a more traditional and smaller city than Tokyo, easier to navigate and get around.
For travellers who prefer less crowds, more space but equally as much history and tradition Kyoto is the better choice.

Great part of the Japan.
Great part of the Japan. Kyoto has a lot of culture to share. We loved the temples and shrines. The Nishiki Market was such an experience. Do not miss it. Just walking the street of Kyoto you see beautiful canals, nature, shrines and temples. It is very spread out but we enjoyed 2 days here feeling we had seen a good amount.

Despite all the mystic you see on TV Koyto is very much a modern city. All the best places to visit are conveniently reachable via train or bus. However, I STRONGLY recommend you bring old fashion cash as 9/10 stores I sent to do not take card. Also, bring Google translate with you, even though slot of places have English menus they're not too clear at times.

Stayed in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and Kyoto felt the most traditional. The other cities we stayed in had huge buildings everywhere whereas Kyoto had a lot of old japanese style districts, plenty of temples and of course the bamboo forest. Loved the Fushimi Shrine area and we stayed near the Nishiki market which was fun to visit in the evenings. If I ever visit Japan again Kyoto will definitely be the place to revisit.
We loved the space in the room. Having come from Tokyo it was lovely to have a room where you could put your case on the floor and not have to climb over it. This hotel had the best bathroom set up of our entire trip. The shower/bath/drying room was amazing with grwat toilteries. The coffee service at reception was great too. The location is near the Toji temple with its old 5 storey pagoda. It's 25 min walk with cases from the station in a quiet area. Lots of little stores and restaurants in the neighbourhood.
Hotel located in a central area only 5 to 10 mins from many of the main attractions. Rooms were comfortable although slightly dated but nothing wrong with that. Breakfast was exceptional and one of the best that we had in Japan. Great options better than some of the newer hotels we stayed in during our travels was definitely a highlight of the stay. Hyatt team were extremely helpful and friendly. All restaurants within the hotel had exceptional food and service. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
The location of the hotel is good, very close to the subway station. The staff at the hotel's front desk are also nice. It was 9/18, at midnight some emergency happened and I had to contact the hotel for the next day. I was anxious and helpless, but a receptionist tried his best to help us, not only translate but also communicate with the hotel for me, eventually solve the problem smoothly. It was a young man, I appreciate his patience so much! I recommend everyone to stay at this hotel when visiting Kyoto!
I have been going back to Japan for many years. I have stayed in many hotels, ryokans, rental apartments and guesthouses. But Kyoto Takasegawa Bettei is in a completely different league. The quality of service is the best I have recived so far. The cedar bath is fantastic, but as if you like there is a famous public bath 5 min walk away. There are plenty of cafes in the area, where vegetarians will also find something for themselves. The subway and buses are also a few minutes away. Definitely recommended.
The staff is excellent. They are very helpful and attentive. They always greeted us when we would leave the hotel and come back. Very modern and clean facility. The breakfast was the star of the show. The hotel breakfast may have been one of the best meals we have ate on this Japan trip and we have been to Japan multiple times before. We at there twice in 3 days. There is a also a very good grocery store underneath the hotel. This hotel is great for families also. We highly recommend this hotel.
Excellent breakfast. Easily the best that I’ve had in a hotel that is an option for the room rate. Wonderful and convenient location just a few steps away from Kyoto Station and the popular bus routes. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Laundromat was convenient and accessible. Room was very well designed except for one drawback (see below). Elevators were available and fast. Check in and out was easy. Coffee room was an unexpected bonus. Housekeeping staff were super alert and efficient.
This hotel was so stunning. Beautifully appointed, sleek stylish interiors, beautifully crafted breakfast menu. Every little detail was so thought out.
The staff were incredibly helpful and spoke wonderful English.
The coffee at the coffee shop was some of the best we had in the country
The location and facilities around the hotel were amazing, from the tranquil gardens, to the craft beer spot and designer boutiques. We can't wait to come stay again!
One of the best guesthouse I had stayed in Japan!Everything was perfect. It’s hidden in a very quiet neighborhood but location is really good, because it’s close to subway station, konbini and near Gion.
You can feel the ryokan vibe when it comes to furniture and design. Very comfortable and big beds. Nice balcony. Clean rooms, bathrooms, kitchen. Wi-if works perfectly. You can also make a laundry for free! Affordable price.
Perfect location - steps away from the train station (which is essential anywhere in Japan), located very closely to tons of action and restaurants, some of the most gorgeous showers I’ve ever seen, and extremely comfortable beds (felt like sleeping on a pillow). Very friendly staff too! Highly recommend - on par with The Thousand hotel in Kyoto (both are the best of the best).
the best stay ever!!! this is a small ryokan type hotel owned and run by the friendliest, most helpful family. I was in love with every aspect of it - the clean and beautiful Japanese-styled rooms, the high-tech bathrooms, the ~secret~ bar in the back, and of course our host Tome, who gave us the best local recommendations and made our stay so good. thank you!
It's an amazing hotel with just the necessary amenities for a solo traveler! Great location, close to the train station entrances and right next to Nishiki Market Street, one of the best places in Kyoto to buy local omiyage and foods! This was my second time staying and I'll definitely stay again whenever I return to Kyoto!
We loved our stay. The room was very spacious and felt luxurious with thoughtful details and beautiful decor. It had everything we needed and was a pleasure to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. The location was excellent, a short walk from Gion area. One of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed in!
The best parts of this hotel - the view and the shower. Seriously, the location couldn't be better right in the Gion district. I'm glad I paid the extra lil better to have a superior room with a view. And the shower was huge; I'm going to miss it! Apart from that, the room was lovely and big.
Everything was amazing. The whole hotel looks new and clean. Breakfast had good choices and everything we tried were delicious. Staff can speak english. Bathroom was the best I have seen in a hotel. Strategic location since the subway station is literally just beside the hotel.
Best hotel ever. Highly recommended. Close to kyoto station, walking distance. Cozy hotel, extremelly clean, staff super friendly. Spacious room and best breakfast ever. Lots of variatey. The spa is also super cool. You will not be dissappointed if you stay there
The room was big and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful!
Best part was that the hotel is just opposite Kyoto station!
With transport, food and shopping all at the doorstep really enhanced our holiday experience in Kyoto!
