The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and the ryokan proved to be an authentic experience. It was great to stay for the night.

Ariella United States of America

The staffs were kinder and more helpful than employees at most five star hotels that I know.

Peter Switzerland

The location is excellent- 6 minutes walk to subway & within walking distance to bus station, Nishiki market , Gion , Pontocho and downtown Kyoto . Very clean and quiet . The staffs are very pleasant & have maps & informations for all the sightseeings.

Linh United States of America

I loved the kindness and hospitality of the hotel workers. They were sweet and charming

Aleksandr United States of America

Small room but we didn't hear any other guests and hope no one was bothered by our 9month old infant. Easy to walk to restaurants and bus line. Staff was very friendly. No elevator on site but they graciously carried our bags up to our room and back down when we checked out. They also held our bags for us for the day when we checked out in the morning. We checked in early with no complaints or hassle. They give you a smart phone for easy searching of things to do in the city.

Chelsea United States of America

Perfect location for visiting Kyoto. Very clean. All staff is extremely kind and helpful. The information material given at arrival is very detailed and helpful.

Marco Italy

I especially appreciated the peaceful atmosphere of the whole place and those little things and details that make it perfect, like tea and sweets offered at arrival to make check-in a pleasant moment, free tea at the entrance and by the room, the mini bathtub which made my evening and relaxed me totally. I can still imagine the smell of the peachy soap... The staff did everything with grace and was extremely kind and helpful, I feel so thankful. The room was as clean as you could ever imagine.

Margherita Sweden

Great ryokan in a quiet and lovely location with many cafes and eating places nearby. The ryokan looks very new and the staff is very helpful and smiling. There are stairs to all the rooms. You can rent bicycles near the rupkan.

Sabine United Kingdom

The hotel is an excellent way to be introduced to a ryokan. The staff were amazing and went well out of their way to help. The hotel is impeccably clean. The hotel is centrally located but on a quiet street.

This property is a ryokan, which is a type of traditional Japanese Inn. Learn more

  • What's a ryokan?
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn. They usually feature bathhouses, multicourse dinners, communal spaces where guests can relax, and rooms with woven-straw flooring and futon mats. Like hotels, a range of ryokans (from budget to luxury) is available. What originated centuries ago as a free rest house for long-distance travelers has evolved into a popular destination for relaxation surrounded by therapeutic mineral springs.
  • What are the big differences between a ryokan and a hotel?
Unlike a hotel, where the guest room is just a place to turn in for the night, a ryokan is more than just a place to sleep. In Japan, many travelers journey long distances to relax in a hot spring bath and feast on a traditional multicourse dinner – staying in a ryokan is an experience in and of itself. These ryokans typically have Japanese-style rooms with woven-straw floors and futon beds (no Western beds and carpeting). You should also remove your shoes at the entrance of the room, or before you enter it. Modern ryokans might serve buffet-style meals in a dining area, while more traditional ryokans tend to serve in-room dinners. Some ryokan rooms have a private bathroom, and others might just have a shared bathroom.
  • What's a kaiseki meal?
Kaiseki is the culinary highlight at a ryokan, embodying beautifully presented dishes that delight both the palate and the eyes. Every one of the 10 to 15 dishes that make up the multicourse Japanese dinner is prepared in a way that highlights the unique textures, colors, and flavors of featured seasonal ingredients and local specialties. Most commonly served at special restaurants and ryokans, a traditional kaiseki dinner usually consists of bite-size appetizers, fresh sashimi (raw fish, like sushi), soup, grilled fish or meat, a hot-pot dish, rice with miso soup, and a small dessert.
  • What's a yukata?
A yukata is a casual summer kimono or robe, typically made of light cotton. Many ryokans provide guests with yukata robes during their stay. In some areas, it's common to see guests strolling through the neighborhood in their yukatas. The loose-fitting garment is perfect for sleeping and relaxing in.
  • How should I wear a yukata?
First, put your arms through the sleeves like you would with a robe. Take the right side of the yukata and wrap it across your body. Then, take the left side and wrap it over the right, making sure that the robe is level at your ankles. Pinning the yukata closed on the right side, wrap the sash around your waist a couple of times and then tie a bow. Generally, the bow is tied around the waist for women, and the hips for men.
  • What's a Japanese hot spring (onsen)?
Onsen (literally "hot spring") is a term often used to refer to both the mineral-rich hot springs and the bathing facilities that house them. Whether the bath is public or private, gender-segregated or mixed, indoor or outdoor, soaking and unwinding in the soothing geothermal waters at an onsen is a millennia-old custom deeply embedded in Japanese culture.
  • What's standard bathing etiquette?
At a bathhouse—onsen or not—guests are expected to remove all clothing in their respective changing rooms before entering the bathing area. As a common courtesy, once inside the bathing area, guests should wash and rinse their bodies thoroughly before quietly stepping into the hot water. Whether you relax in solitude or converse softly with others is up to you, but guests should always be mindful of others. Wash towels are often used to cover one’s private areas while walking around. However, note that you should not put towels in the water.
  • Why are tattoos not allowed?
While tattoos have become more popular among Japan's youth, many Japanese people still associate them with outlaws and organized crime. Nowadays, not all businesses ban customers with tattoos, but you might still be refused admission to bathhouses and swimming pools. Small tattoos can be covered up using waterproof bandaids, but keep in mind that each property has the final say on what’s acceptable.

    Asked about: Superior Triple Room
  • I wish to book a twin room for the 22nd April and then 3,4,5,6 th of May. Can I leave 2x cycle bag 118 x 90 x 30 cms

Thank you for your message. Our Ryokan is very small Japanese hotel and accordingly the room is small. In your case, staying in a superior room with two people will be OK, but staying in a twin (standard or economy) room with two people will be difficult. Thank you for your kind understanding. Host Info

Host Review Score 9.9

A townhouse-style ryokan that stands in an alley a few minutes' walk away from Kyoto's most bustling street, Shijo Kawaramachi, and Nishiki Market, which is now considered a popular tourist spot. It can be identified by the large split curtain with "楽遊 " written on it and the bamboo screens hung on the second and third floors. The ryokan was designed by architect Motonori Sakata, a expert in traditional wooden townhouses. It is a comfortable lodging that maintains the atmosphere of a traditional wooden townhouse while bringing in modern design elements. Upon passing through the split curtain into the lobby, your attention will be drawn to the Japanese painting depicting flowers from all four seasons on the gold leaf. This is a piece drawn by Kyoto-born up-and-coming artist, Mr. Haruki Yamaba, for our ryokan. Please enjoy this masterpiece at close distance to appreciate its elaborate details. **** FREE RENTAL of a Tethering-Enabled Smartphone! ****

Bukko-ji-dori Street, where we are situated, is a street two alleyways south of Shijo-dori Street, which is lined with popular shops and department stores. The incredibly lively Nishiki market is a six minute walk from the hotel. Please enjoy a stroll here. <Bukko-ji Temple>, which is a two minute walk away, is a famous temple that presents a different face to the world depending on the season, such as weeping cherry in spring and vivid yellow ginkgo in autumn. Also, around the hotel, there are also many eating places popular with the locals. In particular, we recommend the following restaurants- <Haru>, which is a shop with a retro atmosphere that was renovated from what used to be a barber's shop, where you can taste authentic Japanese cuisine; <Kamogawa, which provides a banquet course that allows you to experience seasonal foods at a reasonable price; <Mangetsu no Hana>, a long-established restaurant that has an abundant selection of Japanese alcohol, and <Nakajimaya>, a townhouse style izakaya that prides itself on its dishes that make use of carefully selected ingredients.

    Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests.

    How does it work?

    • 1

      It starts with a booking

      It starts with a booking

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

      Followed by a trip

      Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

    • 3

      And finally, a review

      And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.
