弘法大師・空海様がこの地に五重の宝塔を建立し、弟子の道昌僧都が諸人のご廻向(先祖の御供養)をおこなった事から、廻向院と呼ばれていました。宝永年中(1704~)頃、徳川八代将軍吉宗公の命により現在の「恵光院」に改めました。  延慶元年(1308)には、京都の東寺より量調阿闍梨が当院へ転任され再興し、永禄(1558~)の初め頃になって、薩摩藩十七代当主島津兵庫頭義弘と縁を深め檀那関係にありました。また明智光秀の菩提寺でもあります。  山内を見渡せる高台に本堂があり御本尊は阿弥陀如来、弘法大師、不動明王をお祀りしています。また、毘沙門堂にはお大師様作と伝えられる毘沙門天を御本尊に不動明王、愛染明王を併祀。 脇に安置される不動明王はお大師様が唐に渡った際、航海の安全を守ったことから、「舵取り不動」の名がつけられています。 当院では通常の宿坊の他に、「1日修行体験」として、阿字観や写経体験、奥の院ナイトツアーなどをご用意。初めて宿坊を体験される方へ、様々なご指導をさせていただきます。 どうぞ、お気軽にお申し付け下さいませ。
