FAQs about hotels in Phnom Penh

Cambodia's Colorful Capital

Cambodia has successfully dusted itself off from the ravages of war with its colourful capital of Phnom Penh rising from the ashes and sparkling once more. This fascinating city, on the banks of the Mekong River, features exotic markets, cultural jewels and is home to some of the friendliest people on earth.

A visit to the National Museum captures a slice of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer history and art. A different and more recent history suffocates and overwhelms visitors to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former prison of the Khmer Rouge, and The Killing Fields are a short drive from the capital.

The Royal Palace is a striking centrepiece in the centre of Phnom Penh, and is home to the Emerald Buddha and Silver Pagoda. Not far away is the Cambodian Independence Monument that celebrates Cambodia’s sovereignty.

You can satisfy your hunger pains with delicious French-Indochina-inspired meals at various street stalls or classy restaurants. The riverside area has the Art Deco Central Market for a great bargain and there are a variety of bars, especially near Sisowath Quay.

Take time to walk around the French colonial streets with its mix of slow-moving monks and speedy motorbikes. Booking.com has many hotels located in Daun Penh and Chamkar Mon districts, amongst others.

People were extremely friendly and we felt very safe walking around at night. Great value for money: travel, food, accommodation and shopping. Some relaxing riverside walks made up for some streets which were difficult to navigate due to parked vehicles.

I never warm to Phnom Penh. It is far too hot.

I never warm to Phnom Penh. It is far too hot. Walking around is exhausting. The tuktuks and remorques all seem to be dropping to pieces except the ones which lurk on corners and charge too much. The walking street was very crowded and selling a lot of street food. The street felt much safer than before, before it was dubbed 'Walking Street'. I loved to see ordinary Cambodians dancing in Khmer style to Khmer songs. The museum is more interesting than it used to be, and each time I go, there seem to be lots of students and other visitors. The Royal Palace is always enjoyable, but requires walking up and down stairs, sometimes only to be told you can only look into the hall, not enter or photograph from the outside.

Certain things are a must-see...the Killing Fields and S21.

Certain things are a must-see...the Killing Fields and S21. I would do them both on the same day, as they are hard to take. I would not take young children. While we were at the Killing Fields two 5-6-year 6-year-olds were running around laughing and touching things. The parents were too involved with what they were seeing. It was very disrespectful. There are signs posted everywhere to be quiet and not touch. Central Market is HUGE. Go Early. The Royal Palace is a must see! Pub Street at night is the real-deal. Raffles Bar for Happy Hour. There is so much to see and take in! We went to a Sky bar to watch the sunset over the Mekong. It also shows how BIG Phnom Penh really is. We were there for 4 nights and could have easily done another day. Tip: if riding in Tuk-tuks a lot, wear a mask. The exhaust fumes can be brutal!

Phnom Penh is a city that has grown considerably in after...

Phnom Penh is a city that has grown considerably in after Covid. Today there are numerous skyscrapers and commercial buildings and apartments in the city. The Riverside is still good and beautiful on weekdays. Please don't go there on the weekends as during Saturdays and Sundays it has become a walking only street and the entire city of Phnom Penh seems to converge on the Riverside then, making it impossibly crowed and unbearable. A visit to the Killing Fields is a must. And a visit to the Genocide Museum. Both will leave you troubled at how inhuman humans can be. I could not eat anything for a day thereafter. Do visit the Royal Palace though and also climb the small hill where Wat Phnom is situated. Phom means hill and Penh means a woman. Phnom Pehn means the Hill of the Woman or the Woman on the Hill. Wat Phnom is the Hill of that Woman from where the city gets its name. Also take a sunset cruise on the river that often comes with dinner and drinks. Remember also to visit the many restaurants in town. An authentic Khmer massage in upmarket spas is a must. And if you are so inclined there are casinos in town, where I will guarantee you will only lose, never win. With all the growth, Phnom Penh has lost its innocence. Everyone is very commercial now and a tourist should always be on the lookout for people who will try and make a few quick bucks out of you. On the contrary Siem Reap where Angkor Wat is situated is beautiful, charming, with lovable and innocently kind people. Siem Reap and Angkor Wat is a must visit if you are in Cambodia.

Traffic can be overpowering for first time travelers in Asia. Eating out from very expensive to cheap available US$10 entrance fees for foreigners to major sights not justified Getting around by tuktuks is easy but barter for price before start of trip and make sure that destination is understood

We stayed overnight here because of its convenient location to the airport. We had free transfer from and back to the airport, making life easy for a family of four. The hotel was amazing - with a well-equipped gym, stunning pool, and the best breakfast we experienced in Cambodia with an incredible array of food. My teenagers rated the breakfast and gym 10 out of 10. The rooms were very comfortable. I only wished we stayed more than one night. And a special shout out to Kakada who made our farewell from Cambodia so special. A true gentleman.

Arriving in Cambodia for the first time, I desired a soft and comfortable landing. It surely was. A tropical oasis in the centre of town. I was very impressed with the pools and gardens and the absense of city noise. I had no idea I was in the centre of a big busy city. The staff are very friendly and treated me like royalty. My room had much natural light and was very cool even witout the ac on, probably due to the thick walls and many double glass windows. Whenever I need to stay in PP, I will definitely consider the Pavilion.

The staff were exceptionally friendly (especially Vatha and Simas). The room itself was very pleasant and very well maintained. (Having lived and travelled extensively in Cambodia in the past this is not a given). Nice was that air-con could be left on even with the room unoccupied (useful if just popping out for a few minutes). Without a doubt the nicest (and best run) hotel I have used in Cambodia. Highly recommended.

This is an absolute beauty of an hotel, right in the midst of the city centre, though still a green and peaceful retraite away from Phnom Penn’s busy streets. Perfectly located, amazing swimming pool and breakfast was outstanding. One of the best I have had during my three month trip around SEA. We stayed a couple of nights with my 2 young kids. We will definitely return one day.
