Haputale is a small, sleepy Sri Lankan town - as opposed to a tourist town - in a beautiful hill country setting. It is much quieter and much cheaper to stay in than the tourist hot-spots of Nuwara Eliya or Ella, with a range of locally-run guesthouses, rooms and restaurants. The sleepy train station connects it with Colombo, Kandy and Ella, buses pass through and tuk-tuks can take you to nearby waterfalls or the iconic Lipton's Seat from which the stroll down through tea fields is stunning. There are several Olives restaurants in Haputale - Viewpoint was our favourite both for food and a stunning view. If you want a party then avoid Haputale as you'd be bored.

The trip to Lipton's seat takes about 5 hours round trip but is amazing...much better experience than the tour book suggested. An absolute delight was the opportunity to have tea and excellent snacks while in c the clouds at the peak...for an amazingly low price.
Views from our balcony were spectacular and the food - both dinner and breakfast - was top notch

Haputale is no substitute for Ella it's an extra stop.
Haputale is no substitute for Ella it's an extra stop. Haputale has fabulous views right in town and from your lodge, but there is a draught of travellers hang out cafés, while in Ella, you got to hike for the views, the town is packed with cafés and restaurants that makes you want to stay longer. Lodges in Haputale doesn't seem to put people together for shared transport to Horton plains anymore. Almost nobody is going there. I got a very good deal on transport there, but bailed in the gate and went back, due to extortionate entrance fees that added up to $49 for 1 person! - for a 3h hike!!!! - Lipton seat is well worth it though. Go early in the day before the clouds are covering it. The ride up takes you through beautiful tea plantations as well.

It's a lovely and unique area for trekking and hiking. The weather is wonderful, it's a place where the weather changes 6 times a day. Beautiful.
Bambarakanda Falls, Diyaluma Falls, Upper Diyaluma, Haputale Mountain, Lipton's Seat, and Horton Plains are nearby places. Adhisham's Bungalow is another unique experience to see the wildlife in night.

Easy access to famous Adisham bungalow and numerous walking trails. Good base for excursions to Horton Plains, Lipton's Seat, and impressive waterfalls. Haputale station is on scenic railway line through Hill Country. Best to stay in a guesthouse in the surrounding countryside rather than in town centre.
Good location with lovely views over the valley in Haputale. Very close walking distance to the train station. Staff were helpful and suggested different things we could do in and around Haputale during our stay. They booked a tuktuk for us to visit Lipton’s Seat early in the morning. They also let us check out later on the last day. We had dinner at the accommodation one evening - vegetarian and non-veg and we were offered tea when we arrived. Nice balcony area outside the rooms. Rooms were basic with hot water shower.
Our stay at Rosenkas was on of our best of the whole Sri Lanka trip. Very, very friendly owners who did everything to make our stay as pleasent as possible. We had an amazing cooking class with them and they served us a delicous Sri Lankan breakfast the next day. It was even possible to wash our clothes in their laundry machine. The rooms are very nice, the view is breathtaking, the whole experience was just perfect! Thank you very much again!
Its located in the city center. Only 2-3mins walk from Haputale Bus Station and around 5mins wal from Haputale Train Station. Friendly staff and host. They also have a restaurant. Nice room with clean bathroom. Hot water shower is also there. Super comfy beds. There is a balcony with great scenic views. You can catch the sunrise, sunset from lying on the bed. Very beautiful, stunning view from the balcony. Loved it.. ❤️
Everything. The room was lovely and had great views. The staff went above and beyond - they’re so friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fantastic, but the best part was definitely the on-site cooking class. It was so much fun and so yummy. It’s a bit outside of Haputale but a 300 rupee Tuk Tuk is super easy, and it’s walkable to the monastery down the street which is a much see little attraction. A+ all around!
Our stay here couldn’t have been better. The guesthouse is the perfect location in Haputale with a stunning view, and our room was comfortable and big. The best part of our stay was being looked after by the lovely family who were so friendly and generous. We had delicious meals and thanks to his advice and organising we had great trips to Lipton’s seat and Horton Plains. Thanks so much!
What a great place! Very comfortable rooms, with a big clean bathroom with hot shower. Good and comfortable beds with big blankets. Although it was a bit misty during our stay, the view from the room was amazing. Great hosts and delicious breakfast and dinner. A bit outside of haputale, but the location and views make up for it. We had our own tuktuk so didn’t mind! Thank you!
The view from the room, as well as the hotel, has the most stunning view of Haputale, helpful and friendly staff. The cleanness of the room is adequate. Would have been helpful to have a quilt cover in the room, as it gets chilly at night. Hot water facilities work fine. It walking distance of the Haputale town and eating place, which is convenient.
The owner is so friendly and welcoming.
He will help you to plan things to see around Haputale for little money :)
He organised us cheap and tasty Sri Lankan dinner and the breakfast was really good as well!
The rooms have an amazing view and you only need to walk 5 min to get to the bus stop:)
I would definitely stay there again 💜
Very peaceful location with amazing views, but easy walking distance to Haputale station, shops, bank, tuks tuks etc. Rooms large, with huge private balconies over looking mountains. Garminy, the manager, and Kasun, the owner, are both incredibly helpful and kind. The food is good. It's really good value for money.
The place has great potential! They a private river and waterfall which is amazing, had a dip at evening and the next morning. The staff were very kind and wanted us to have the best time. They lit a big bonefire for us at night. The meals are huge and very nice organized! Very tasty both dinner and breakfast!
We had a wonderful experience at the Leisure mount view holiday Inn in Haputale. Every staff member I encountered, from the bellman to the check- in to the cleaning staff were delightful and eager to help!
Food was excellent,
Thank you!
Will recommend to my colleagues! And best place to stay. 🇱🇰
Superb & amazing view. The room, washroom very clean & all common places are nice. Nice foods. The owner helped us to find nice visiting places. They are doing their service best than the money. Definitely we'll come back when we visit to Haputale again. Easy to find. Any vehicle can accessible.
The hosts are very nice and friendly. Feel like a home away from home. Food is delicious and the location is one of the best I v ever been. Viww from the front rooms are heavenly. Rooms and washrooms were very clean. Can recommend this place to anyone.
Clean, and well kept property. Rooms and bathrooms are spotless, with working hote water . The staff are friendly and the food is absolutely delicious. The over stay is well worth the price and would highly recommend.......
