Aquastar was well located right on the Malecon. Easy walking distance to lots of restaurants. Yes, it was right on the beach; but, not an area nice enough to get into the water. Too much seaweed. You had to walk to a nice beach,

Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants.
Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants. Very rustic in terms of hotels and restaurants.
The beach is clean and nice, clean water. However, it does suffer from the same problem of all beaches from Cancun up to here: lots of seawater. So cleaneless will depend how often they clean the seaweed.
Overall is a place to go once; no need to return, but glad I went.
Food cost can be expensive for what they are.

Sleepy boring town with nothing to do but relax and enjoy the sea. There are a bunch of snorkeling and diving locations if you're into that.
An excellent place to slow down and forget about the world.
A few quirks:
The nearby waterpark was closed because there was no cruise ship.
Same for the dolphin park, and by extension the entire touristy cruise port, is off-limits for 'regular' tourism according to the guard at the entrance there. So you can't get your fridge magnets and tshirts from there...
Half of the town is closed when there are no cruise ships. As if regular tourism doesn't matter or is not worth working for.
The difference with restaurants, shops and tours being offered was night and day when a cruise boat docked on Sunday.
Good stuff:
A laidback atmoshphere thorughout town. Not much annoying sales people. Some decent restaurants that have a good price/quality balance.
Other than the relaxed and fun strip of mahahual there isn't much to do. Which is great if you just want to relax and enjoy some food or drinks like we did.
And for that, our trip was too short (3 nights) but with the average hotel we had and few restaurant options that were open and not overpriced, 3 nights was just right I suppose.
The ride to Mahahual is an easy one, about 60KM from the main road, and that's the time where the world literally disappears in the background as you enter and enjoy the slow pace of Mahahual.

The best part of Mahahual other than the beaches is taking a trip with "Amigos del Mar Mahahual" to the atolon "Banco del Chinchorro", to Snorkel and or scuba dive. The company is very professional and have great equipment. The place is the biggest coral reef in the caribean has a lot of history and it is amazing. It was my first time snorkeling and I am oficially a fan and i will gladly go back there!!!
The town is very calm and friendly. There are days when cruise ships arrive and it becomes noisy but entertaining. Great choice of restaurants with a surprising offer of great cuisine for diner. Yaya, Malecon 21, or the restaurant at the 40 canones Hotel

More could be done to improve Mahahual, I visited Mahahual about 15 years ago and it was quiet, peaceful and clean. I was quite disappointed in how run down it had become; it was idyllic and not crazy like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun so I wanted my husband to experience lovely beaches etc, but this wasn't meant to be.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a truly spectacular beach that left me in awe. The beach was situated near a beautiful coral reef, and the water was crystal clear and calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The soft, white sand was incredibly inviting, and I spent many hours lounging on the beach and soaking up the sun.
One of the things that really stood out to me about this beach was how peaceful and serene it was. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches I've visited, this one felt like a true paradise, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. The lack of waves also made it perfect for families with young children or anyone who wants to enjoy the water without worrying about getting tossed around.
Another thing that impressed me was the sheer natural beauty of the area. The coral reef was home to an incredible array of marine life, including colorful fish and sea turtles, which made for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. And with the stunning scenery all around, it was easy to forget about the outside world and just enjoy the moment.
Overall, I would highly recommend this beach to anyone looking for a peaceful and picturesque getaway. It truly is a slice of paradise that I will never forget.
The location of the hotel is indescribable, it is only a few steps from the small, cozy hut to the palm-lined beach. The facility and the bathroom are kept very clean - if requested, the hut was also cleaned during the stay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the attached restaurant had a very good selection of mexican food. I would definitely come back!
Nice cosy hotel at seafront just across the street. There were enough beds and places to relax on the beach. In front of the hotel is a small ok pool smd bar. Near hotel are the bars, restaurants or places to buy a snorkeling tour. Altought you can enjoy snorkeling by your, cos there are reefs in front of the hitel beach.
Very helpful staff, good on-site restaurant and yummy breakfast! The location is excellent: a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the main strip of Mahahual, but nice and quiet. The hotel does not have a pool, but just cross the street and enjoy the private sandy beach with sun loungers.
once of the best and the nicest place which ever seen in my life (I visted over 70 countries already), small boutique hotel with italian restaurant, almost private beach and tropical garden with palms... sunrise which wake you up at 8 mornig gives you a good viebe for hole day.
Great location with beach right in front of hotel. Good outdoor seating, and own jetty with hammocks at the end to soak up a beautiful sunrise. Plenty of wildlife in the trees - so ecologically a happy place to be! Food very good, especially fish tacos.
We keep coming back to Pranoia because of the tranquility of the place, the virgin endless beach and the nice staff..
The food is good and very affordable. I recommend this place! Have you ever seen a virgin beach? This is the spot
The hotel is very modern and the rooms spacious, with both WiFi and AC working perfectly. The maintenance guy was very friendly and helpful. The fact that the hotel isn't located right by the beach was a plus during Sargasso season.
Probably the best option on the strip, day time is loud as the cruise ships arrive but it gives a fun vibe for the day, then is very quiet in the mornings and evenings. Nice that there are dedicated beach chairs for the hotel!
Great location - by the beach and in a quieter stretch of the place. Our dive shop was next door which made things convenient. The hotel has interesting decor (lots of repurposed materials) and staff is courteous.
Great property, very private and you have your own beach to enjoy. Very quite and relaxed. Staff is great and the restaurant good food) keeps you from having to go into town and search for something.
it was nice and clean, the pool was nice and clean and the room that we stayed in had a safe which I liked. this property is a short walk to the beach, close to places where you could eat
Location was great. The beach club and restaurant were great, however they are independent of the hotel. Free parking was nice. The room was spacious. The location was easy to find.
The location is totally awesome. Staff was attentive and friendly. The breakfast was great and plentiful. There is more than enough palapas, chairs and lounges on the beach.
Loved being right on the beach and our front porch chairs with tables. Enjoyed good food, a bike ride, massage and swimming on the beach on beach walkway.
The location was great, slightly outside the center and in front of the beach. The hotel provides towels for the beach and the beach area is very nice.
