At the centre of the Mayan Riveria is Playa del Carmen, a playground for hip Europeans and toned-and-tanned Americans. This resort town showcases the renowned white-sand beaches of the Caribbean Coast along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Playa del Carmen's powdery white sands are nestled between Cancun to its north, Tulum in the south and the island of Cozumel, 20 km east with its fantastic diving in the nearby Great Maya Reef. Awake from an afternoon nap to take a dip, go snorkelling or deep-sea fishing in the beautiful blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Playa is an easy choice as a holiday destination with its range of hotels, many first-class restaurants and beachside nightclubs. Quinta Avienda, also known as 5th Avenue, is the main tourist hub and shopping district. For a more authentic Mexico experience, venture outside of the centre to a local cenote (sinkhole) or Mayan ruins in Tulum.
Cruise ships dock in nearby Cozumel and traffic people to the mainland arriving at the Playa del Carmen Maritime Terminal. If the glimmering Caribbean waters are full, then Booking.com has a huge number of hotels with an outdoor swimming pool by the beach.

The beach wasn't swimmable because it had a lot of rocks, a lot of seaweed and the hotel didn't clean it. Go to Cancún, Playa del Carmen is not beautiful. The resort: Yucatan princess was the worst part, as the food served there was horrible. I came home very sad.

Playa del Carmen had a lot of seaweed and I found that unpleasant. Playa del Carmen has great weather and great food, but it is crazy expensive. It's been a few years since my last trip to Mexico, but beers for 20-30 Pesos are long gone. Now it is more like 65-95. A bad margarita was 110 pesos and a good one was 190 or more. Feeding my family of 3 cost well over $100/day, and that's eating only 2 meals. A two tank dive for a certified diver was $145. A one hour snorkeling tour for 3 was $210. Also, it's full of hawkers and vendors and scams (the tip is often added to your bill at a restaurant and they try to hide that from you). Playa del Carmen had none of feel that Zijhuataneo did in 10 years ago. It's not a community. It's a place to go for tourists (from Mexico, the US, and Europe) to enjoy the beach and weather and for Mexicans to go to extract money from tourists.BrianSpain
