FAQs about hotels in Rotorua

A Volcanic Land of Wonders

Rotorua is living proof of the magnificent, and sometimes mind-boggling, might of nature. Smoking hot springs, bubbling mud pools and fast-spouting geysers give the surrounding landscape an almost other-worldly feel.

This New Zealand city sits in the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s newest geothermal hotspot. It was created after the 1886 eruption that covered Te Wairoa Buried Village, between 2 of many lakes gracing this fertile terrain. By Lake Rotorua’s shores is the luxurious Polynesian Spa with its thermal pools. Just behind in Government Gardens are the city’s best cultural offerings: the Arts Village, Tamaki Maori Village and Rotorua Museum, in an elegant former bath house.

Native animals roam in Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park below Mount Ngongotaha, accessible via the Skyline cable car. The views while ascending make it obvious why this is called the Bay of Plenty. Tikitere Thermal Park on the opposite side of the lake is known as Hell’s Gate, but as long as you can ignore the sulphuric smell, the spas are simply heavenly.

More springs are in Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, whose surrounding forest is popular for mountain biking, and Wai-O-Tapu where the Champagne Pool is a striking mix of green and orange.

Booking.com’s accommodation range is as diverse as the scenery, encompassing luxury hotels, cheap hostels and motels near Rotorua Airport.

Rotorua is an incredible destination with a wide range of activities available. There's many wonderful scenic places that can be visited for free, such as Kuirau Park with its geothermal features at the lake end of the park, or if you prefer, take a stroll through the Redwood Forest. The Government Gardens are a very popular scenic spot and if you carry on down the road on the left you will find access to a lakeside geothermal area. I've not even mentioned the many beautiful lakes that Rotorua is famous for or the many excellent 'manmade' paid activities but there really is something for everyone. It's also a fabulous area for cycling, especially so if you enjoy mountain biking. There's plenty of dining options though my favourite for many years has been The Fat Dog Cafe and Bar which offers great coffee and a wonderful food selection.

The Sky Gondola, Polynesian Spa, Redwood Treewalk were all great and I would recommend them to anyone. For the gondola and treewalk I would recommend getting there early. Plenty of free things to do. Kuirau Park has free hot foot baths. The lakefront park and boardwalk are amazing. Don’t miss the Kuirau Park flea market and the night market. The public buses go to a lot of the tourist spots - very convenient.

We only stayed in Rotorua for one night, as we came in from Rotorua airport before moving on to Taupo for 4 nights. For future travellers considering these two towns, I would recommend staying in Rotorua for at least two nights and less time in Taupo; with a car it's easy enough from both to get wherever you want to go on the island, but there's actually a lot in Rotorua we would have liked to do. We went to Mitai Maori for the dinner + show and cannot recommend it enough; it was so interesting and well-put together as an cultural experience. Also, we went to the 'Secret Spot' Hot Tubs just outside Rotorua; also a must if you want a relaxing day out! Would have liked to visit one of the spas as they looked amazing, but next time! If I could describe Rotorua in one word it would be : quiet. I guess we were there at the end of high season, so hard to say if it would have been different at another time, but man... there was nothing going on (in a good way!) walking around town and around the lake you just feel so peaceful... so definitely a place to go if you are looking to disconnect and relax a bit!

This is a strange but interesting place.

This is a strange but interesting place. The geothermal activity is all around, the parks and even gardens have hot water and steam radiant g from the earth below. Asthmatics be aware, the toxic gas is never ending. We visit hobbiton and the volcanic valley. Both were excellent. Worth doing the boar ride at the valley. The Tamarki Māori village experience was very disappointing. We expected a traditional cook out , it was basically a none traditional school dinner like meal. Scotch eggs and curried chicken is not trditional!

    Absolutely loved Rotorua.

Absolutely loved Rotorua. First night we arrived, we ate at White Tiger Restaurant and Bar, for all you can eat, it was absolutely delicious, fast service and the staff were awesome and accomodating. Attended the 8:40pm session at for The Redwoods Night Walk (Highly recommended booking FastPass Tickets online to skip the 45 minute wait, saved us a lot of time.). Was an awesome experience and absolutely beautiful. Next day we began with the Lake Rotomahana boat cruise, (Highly recommend booking the first session to avoid a busy boat as we did, we had boat to ourselves other than 2 others on the boat, so plenty of space to move around, whereas next session was completely full.). Awesome experience, learnt a lot also and it was so beautiful. Next we did the Gondola and Luge, bought a 5 ride pass, was a perfect way to use the day, unfortunately 2 tracks were closed, but we still an amazing experience, will definitely be doing again. Had a bunch of photos printed, I feel the photos are expensive just to have sent to your email though, my only down of the Gondola/Luge experience. Finished the night off at Mini Golf Rotorua with Rabbits, which was also awesome, (Recommend to do at night too, with the night lights, was quite pretty.). The bunnies were super cute, and so, so, soft. We then finished our holiday in Taupo the following day, swimming in the lake and lunch.

As of this writing, I have visited approximately 9 other cities in NZ and Rotorua was absolutely my favorite! From the glow worm caves I experienced at night while paddling in a kayak to hiking around Waiotapu and seeing all the geothermal activity along with the vibrant colors of the lakes, this place was wonderful. What's more, the people were more welcoming here than in any other city I've visited. It's not a knock on the other communities as the people everywhere else were also nice, but the folks in Rotorua just seemed to go an extra step. You've got their Redwood forest as well as many lakes to choose from to enjoy a variety of activities.

Great stay! The reception/manager was lovely and provided me with an extra heater (I am a cold person) and remembered my name each time we saw each other! I was upgraded to a bigger room on arrival. I was able to park my hire car outside my window which was great. You can get change from reception for the laundry facilities. Everything in Rotorua was about a 6 to 10 minute drive from the motel, so it was a great location! I was able to walk to my car hire place (RAD Care Hire 10 - 15 minutes).

I loved that the host put the heat pump on for us before we arrived. We got to Rotorua late as we flown up from Dunedin. Everything went so smoothly no complicated situations. My mother passed away and our family home already had visitors from overseas. I was so happy with the Airbnb me and my family stayed in it was close to my mums house.

We enjoyed a short weekend break with the extended family. The house was easily accessible from the main road. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood and had brilliant views overlooking Rotorua Lake. The view at sunset is exceptional. The kids had a great time playing in the yard and enjoyed the heated spa.
