Great place to stay. Very comfortable, great decor. We travel to Athol several times a year and hopefully will stay here again. Relaxing and pleasant place to stay

New ZealandOur stay at Mataura Lodge was a fantastic experience. Me and my partner spent the New Year's Eve here and enjoyed ourselves very much - the spa tub, the fireplace, bright and airy living room and luxurious bedrooms. We couldn't have been happier :) Thanks Jason for the wonderful moments we spent at the Lodge.

Great evening in the sun on the front steps while we watched the hay bailing in the opposite paddock. We made use of the log burner as it snowed overnight. Close to a cafe which is open for breakfast.

House has big living space and 3 double bedrooms ...room for family or group of friends. Hosts very welcoming and helpful. Brown trout cafe just down the road for meal. We really enjoyed the stay. Thanks .

BelgiumBeautiful lodge and Jason had supplied a gorgeous basket of fruit and a bottle of local wine on arrival. Very special. Loved the closeness to the countryside and ease of getting to anywhere we wanted to go. Plenty of room for parking, superb outdoor area.

Mataura Lodge Athol is immaculately renovated and situated in an idyllic rural setting. Located in private large gardens, only 45. minutes from Queenstown along the Southern Scenic Route toward Te Anu, it is perfect for a couples retreat or take advantage of our additional spaces to make this an ideal home for a family or group getaways. Mataura Lodge comes with unique Southland and Otago history. Starting life in the King Edward Army Barracks, built circa 1939, the building served to accommodate soldiers during wartimes. It then moved on to become a temporary home for New Zealand immigrants, seeking a new life in this beautiful country. Although the building has been completely renovated, original features remain. The floor boards in the main living area have been lovely restored and refitted, meaning you will be walking on a small part of history. Living Spaces included: Master Bedroom with Queen bed, private en suite and private sitting room Twin Bedroom with two singles beds, sharing a Jack n Jill bathroom with Queen Bedroom Queen Bedroom with Queen bed, sharing Jack n Jill bathroom with Twin Bedroom Fully equiped kitchen Spacious lounge and dining Rural views
Mataura Lodge is in Athol, about 45 minutes from Queenstown along the Southern Scenic Route toward Te Anu. Athol has long been a favourite location for fishing, with the Mataura and Orieti Rivers providing some of the best dry fly fishing in the world. The lodge is also perfectly situated providing easy access to some of the best cycling and mountain bike tracks in New Zealand, which offers a great way to get out and truly experience the beauty of this part of New Zealand. Athol has two popular licensed cafes, which are busy throughout the year with locals and tourists.
