The Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna. Our goal is to protect and extend a vibrant ecosystem while educating others on the importance of conservation. We view ourselves as partners with our volunteers, visitors, community, and the environment. We are not on the tourist maps and we do not have tour buses stopping every hour or so. The Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary is located 250km from a crowded city, 50km from the closest supermarket, 2km from the next door neighbour, and at an arm's length from the Milky Way. Imagine levitating over the forest, resting on your back and contemplating the blue sky contrasting against the lush green leaves of the trees surrounding you. We invite you to experience a different side of our forest by staying a night or two in one of our tree tents. Set-up in secluded clearings, our comfortable tree tents bring you as close to nature as you can get. Nestled in the trees, you can defy gravity and examine closer the hundreds of varieties of moss, the stick insects, and the busy birds. In the evening, while listening for the haunting call calls of the kiwi.
This sanctuary has been founded by someone like you; someone who loves nature and who tries to make a difference. Initially, the plan has been to protect the forest from the logging operations nearby. With time came experience and the understanding that the endangered kiwi birds living in the forest need protection, too. The deeper we explored in this jungle-like environment, the more we realized that it is a never-ending source of learning about nature and about oneself. This is the discovery that we would like to share with you.
The nearby Kauri Coast attractions include the refreshing Kai Iwi lakes, the 2000 year old tree named Tane Mahuta, and the best place in the North Island where you can see a kiwi in the wild: the Trounson Kauri Park.
