Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój Cieplice Health Resort Cieplice Baths 1 km Jelenia Gora 9 km Karpacz 17 km Szklarska Poreba 16 km Jakuszyce 25 km Swieradow 33 km Rudawy Janowickie - Sokolik 20 km Pilchowice Reservoir 14 km DESCRIPTION (*) According to the legend, the local springs were discovered in 1175 by Duke Bolesław the Tall while chasing deer during a hunt[4]. The wounded animal jumped into the hot springs, recovered, and the prince was to build a hunting lodge in this place. In fact, Boleslaus the Tall, who spent many years at the royal and imperial court in the German Empire, was the first to notice the possibility of using the local thermal waters on the model of those functioning in the West. However, it was his great-grandson, Duke Bolesław II Rogatka, who brought the Augustinians from Wrocław in 1261 to develop this corner. The new settlement was then named Clarus Fons. The Augustinians probably could not develop the potential of this place, because Bolesław's son, Bernard Lwówecki, on March 18, 1281, donated the town of Calidus Fons (Warm springs) to the Hospitallers from Strzegom. Hospitallers were more suitable for guardians of healing springs and it was probably them who erected the first residential buildings here, as well as a temple - the church of St. John the Baptist. It was mentioned in 1318. Cieplice was already recorded under the Slavic name Cheplevode[5]. At the end of the 13th century, the Joannites were the owners of large land areas near the Karkonosze Mountains, at that time covering about 450 fiefs in several villages[6]. After 1290[5] - probably, however, only in the 14th century - in unknown circumstances, they also left Cieplice. Only another order - the Cistercians, who appeared here at the beginning of the 15t
