Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guesthouse, Booking.com has a wide range of Funchal accommodations.
On the whole a clean city in which I felt safe. The island is very hilly (mountainous) but the public transport (urban and interurban buses) provide a good service, as does the cable car (though this is priced more at the tourists than the locals).

The weather was perfect - not too hot but sunny - for getting out and about We stayed a week and went on a couple of trips out to the island.
Great places to eat and drink and plenty of history. Funchal felt a real thriving town with distinct culture compared to Canary Islands.

Interesting town.
Interesting town. Nice shops and a wide variety of restaurants.
It is a bit hilly, which could be an issue for some visitors - but taxis and buses are available.
Buses to other destinations are available and fun to use.

Madeira is a very beautiful island with its mountains, ocean, flowers and very wonderful and helpful people. I would like to go back there and recommend visiting this island. Funchal is one of the most beautiful cities. I liked the food, the varied fruits, the kind people and of course the rum.

Beautiful garden city with well kept gardens and trees...
Beautiful garden city with well kept gardens and trees everywhere. Incredible array of restaurants and bars, which were well priced and didn't disappoint. Weather was great, averaging around 20 deg C during our stay creeping up to 24 deg C on some days, but low humidity. Quite windy some days but we ate breakfast outside every day. It is extremely hilly though, away from the promenade - so a reasonable degree of fitness and mobility needed to fully enjoy (or use plentiful local taxis and buses).
We also stayed just outside Funchal, with a hire car, the previous week. This gave us a chance to see more of the island, which is worth doing - plenty of half and full day tours from Funchal. You'll need some layers & waterproofs when heading up into the mountains, which rise up to 2,000m and have very different weather to Funchal! There were still plenty of things left for another time, even after a fortnight. We'll be back!

I've been to Funchal 4 times in the past year.
I've been to Funchal 4 times in the past year. Ive been to many places in Europe and Funchal is easily the best. I've normally stayed in hotels but took an apartment this time. Inspired. So much to do and see. The old town is absolutely remarkable. Dont know how many miles i walked, but I've come home fitter than i left
The staff were so friendly and helpful. Fantastic breakfast. Plenty of choice and all fresh. The grounds were spacious and plenty of different areas to sit in. Loved the daily happy hour! We ate both in the Alfama and Basilico restaurants and the food was excellent. Elton John tribute night was great fun. Played the crazy golf and pétanque which was fun. Courtesy bus was not running but Buses to town centre and airport stopped just outside hotel. Will return to this hotel when we visit Madeira again.
Tucked away in the perfect area about 10mins walk from the old town. The staff were EXCEPTIONALLY helpful and friendly, Nuno planned our trip for us after we struggled to get a hire car. The room was lovely with really lovely products. If the weather had been nice we would have sat out on the beautiful terrace amongst the well kept flowers overlooking Madeira. They also served breakfast at any time. I will be recommending this hotel to anyone I know visiting Madeira without fail.
It was a wonderful location, within walking distance to old Town Funchal. It was quiet and private with a beautiful garden and place to just relax, enjoy breakfast or an afternoon drink. The rooms were wonderful with a little kitchen and lots of food available (you did have to pay). Staff was amazing - SO helpful and friendly. And the BREAKFAST! Oh goodness - one of the best I've had with a huge variety and all you could eat. I definitely will go back next time I'm in Funchal.
The apartment was spacious, light and well equipped. The location was excellent being right next to the old town with its shops, restaurants and bars. The apartment was also very convenient for public transport and the pick up point for tours. The hosts were lovely and informative providing great bar and restaurant recommendations. We loved Madeira and would look to stay again if we returned.
Sandy was really helpful and nice person. Her apartment is just with beautiful view. Near to the city center. She is so kind, having maps and info about all island. We were so lucky and happy to meet her. This apartment is very clean and quiet. The parking infront of the main doors is cery nice. If you would like to go to Madeira, enjoy this stay. We really did.
The host and hostess could not have been more accommodating. They provided maps marked up with places of interest, restaurants, food and beverage suggestions.
They provided champagne for New Years, wine, Madeira wine, liquor, water, fruit, bread, home made jam, etc.
Beautiful views of the ocean and city from the living room and balcony
The apt is bright, clean, comfortable and quiet. Lynn is one of the best people I have ever met. Went out of her way several times to help a severely jetlagged woman who lost her luggage and left behind her coats. Thanks again.Hope we meet again. You know I will always stay at your place if I am in Madeira again.
Great location just a short walk from the old town in Funchal. Buses easy to access as well. Somewhat steep hill going up to the hotel with no sidewalk, but easily managed and completely worth it. Beautiful pool and view, as well as a lovely breakfast every morning. Receptive and friendly staff as well.
Charming main building of character, central to old town centre and well away from the busier main hotel area further west. Swimming pool with views up the hill to Monte. Grand elevated view of Funchal but only a short walk from old centre. The walk up is easy. Very quiet location.
This is the best hotel for the price in the whole Madeira. Best location you can find if you want some action and to reach everything easily in Funchal. I can say that we liked this hotel even more than the most expensive Savoy's in Funchal and Calheta. Less people, better food.
The hotel is beautiful, especially the rooftop area where you get 360° views of Funchal. A few steps from the market and supermarket and the ocean at the bottom of the street. The staff are especially helpful and lovely. We will stay here again if we can get back to Madeira.
The hotel is super close to everything, including the marina and main street of Funchal. It's location is perfect, especially for first time visitors of Madeira. The staff is nice, helping the guests to have a great stay. The pool is fine, but a bit small.
This hotel was simply perfect. Great location, spacious and comfortable rooms, beautiful views from the rooftop, and excellent restaurant. This hotel was an experience in itself and was the cherry on top of our time in Madeira.
Turim has incredibly comfortable rooms, nice beds, nice balconies, a wonderful pool and rooftop bay (Marco is the best!) and a huge and delicious breakfast. We loved Funchal and this hotel was a perfect home base for Madeira.
Great location for sightseeing, restaurants, and shopping, walking distance to Old Town and the waterfront, beautiful sea view, clean and spacious apartment and nice kitchen, Madeira Wine and traditional dessert upon arrival.
Super COSY. Great location. Beth is a super host and she is always available if/when needed. If I have the chance to come back to Madeira, this is definitely the place I would like to stay. Thank you Beth!
