My room and view from the windows where gorgeous. The decor was well maintained Old World charm. Everything was well kept up without a “worn” look. But the staff is very young and has not matched a 5 star rating. No wine tasting at 5pm or snacks or music just a hotel in a good location. Many times the desk didn’t know the travel answers to my questions. My first day experience at breakfast had no glasses or waitstaff helping at the buffet. Their was a long wait for coffee yet we only had 8-10 people.

Some elements were dated. Considering the age of the property this was quite understandable. Bathrooms some room for improvement. Hopefully when the weather warms the outside spaces will be improved.

Getting the car from the parking area back to hotel, although only a 3 minute walk, was long and very complicated

Reception staff was terrible. Our first room had an irritating noise coming from the air conditioning. We asked the staff about this and the lady it was normal since all the system passed through that room... After our persistence the lady got us another room, still with a bit of noise, but bearable. The last day, in the morning, when we were preparing to shower, there was no hot water. We to reception again and the lady told us she couldn't do nothing, and that we had to wait until next Monday... After some persistence and with the help of a cleaning lady eventually she asked another person to try and fix the problem. The feeling I got is that some employees didn't care about anything. This is 5 star hotel, but to be honest I would rate it 3 star... We got really disappointed.
The only good thing about it is the location.

Its connection to Lord Byron was a pleasant surprise because even though I studied him and wrote about him, I did not know he stayed at this hotel. No wonder. It is a gorgeous facility.

Would be great to have more information about how to drive there (with so many one way streets) and parking (or the lack of it).

Nothing - all good!
Wonderful 3-night experience at Lawrences Hotel! This is a small boutique hotel built in 1764, oozing old-world charm and history, and a convenient five-minute walk from Sintra's center. We stayed in the Lord Byron Suite on the 4th floor, and would highly recommend booking a suite, or at least a Superior room on the back side as that is where the views are. Our suite was amazing, with separate Living Room with two doors opening onto the small balcony. Well appointed with period furnishings, large bed and thoughtful little extras, such as an actual electrical outlet in bedroom near the mirror! (Women will understand.) Views from the suite were of the forest at back, and a side view of the valley beyond. Front desk staff was very welcoming, Andrea greeted us and took us to our room, taking time to tour the suite as well as explain all services of the hotel. Cozy feel throughout the hotel. Confused on the reviews that mentioned "dated decor" as all the common areas we saw looked recently done with lovely fabrics and color combinations. And I'm picky! Several areas for quiet reading with a cup of tea. The restaurant had a decent breakfast buffet with an assortment of hot and cold items, fresh fruit, and a bonus of waffles and maple syrup a couple of mornings. We also had dinner in the restaurant one evening, and the food was excellent. Guests enjoy a 30% discount on meals. Restaurant staff were very attentive. Enjoyed the convenience of walking into the center, however Sintra is a popular destination for day-trippers, so is pretty busy with tourists during the day, especially near the National Palace. Driving in Sintra would be a challenge. After 4 or 5pm things slowed down and we enjoyed wandering around town after visiting areas outside of the center, eg. Monserrate Palace, a hidden gem with beautiful gardens, lovely palace, as well as a great cafe for lunch or coffee/tea break. We would stay here again!

For a hotel of this standard, staff seemed rather thin on the ground at times. The restaurant was quite good, although the fish was overcooked, and the breakfast, by Portuguese standards, was disappointing.
Comfortable hotel with plenty of character. Ideal for walking into town, but a nightmare to drive to. The one way system in Sintra has obviously changed fairly recently and the car hire satnav had definitely not caught up.
