My impression of Suphan Buri is that it is a region to experience true "Thai culture". The influx of foreign tourism hasn't yet inundated Suphan Buri and their tourism isn't yet fully geared towards "falang". This does have some slight inconveniences for foreigners BUT the benefits way outweigh the negatives by one hundred fold! Anywhere has some sort of negatives anyway! Suphan Buri is ancient, and I mean truly ancient ... it is also the heartland of real Thai culture historically. And it's where a "falang" traveller can immerse in a pure, unadulterated THAI experience. The temples, cultural centres and museums, Buddhist attractions and restaurants are fantastic encounters. For example, the way in which the Thai people here "make merit" at impressively well-attended temples is locally unique and differs from the way people in the north and east "make merit". Simple things make huge impressions! The massive "Stone Buddha" is an absolute "must see" as are the surrounding hilltop temples ... steeped in devotional Buddhist tradition and practice. The very early Chinese influx has also left its mark. Another "must see" is the huge dragon and Chinese temple near the heart of Suphan Buri city centre. In fact here I would put aside half a day to explore the surrounds and museum and also have a meal and some shopping at the beautiful little shopping village there. I spent a wonderful evening at a street market where there was food, great entertainment, friendly locals and all sorts of attractions. There is much much more to Suphan Buri than this small glimpse and I wish I was there much longer to explore further. I definitely intend to return and do just that ... it's a wonderful, intriguing, fascinating, enthralling and charming place ... and I haven't even mentioned the charmingly brilliant restaurants there. Do yourself a favour ... GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!
