The location is really close to most attractions in downtown Hilo, so even if you aren't driving, you can still easily Uber to most places from the hostel. It's also only 10 minutes away from the Hilo airport by car. The bus terminal is within walkable distance (about 15-20m) if you are planning to take the bus to the volcanoes national park. The owner and staff are friendly and super helpful. The beds are comfy too. Definitely recommend it if you're travelling on a budget! There are also lockers in the common area - just have to bring your own pad lock.

Enjoyed Liliuokalani Park and Japanese Gardens, holiday lights festival in Japanese Gardens, live Hawaiian music at Grand Naniloa lobby bar, beautiful free zoo with great animals (donations welcome), waterfalls, proximity to Volcanoes NP. We stayed on the sunny side of the island for beach time for five days, then drove over the mountains and along the beautiful Hamakua coast (which has gorgeous botanical gardens) to Hilo, spent a day in Hilo - walked to Liliuokalani Park and around the Japanese gardens and the little island; drove to the zoo and waterfalls - and after two nights in Hilo checked out and drove to Volcanoes NP and spent the afternoon there, very crowded on Christmas Day; drove around towards Kona, had drinks and food at the King Kamehameha hotel in Kona and looked at the amazing huge collection of historical Hawaiian paintings and accompanying signs there, like a museum of old Hawaii; and drove to the airport and flew home.

Downtown is pretty tired looking.
Downtown is pretty tired looking. It really needs some upgrades and fresh look. However, the park is Fantastic!! Beautiful trees and walkways, really relaxing. Needs some coffee shops in the area. We had dinner at Ponds, great food but waiter was rude to the people at the next table.

Friendly people in spite of inflation and still some great values. Beautiful geography and a wide variety of climates can be experienced on a single island. Downtown has been revitalized and there is even more nostalgia for the old Hawaiian buildings there since the Lahaina devastation on Maui.

The beds are amazing - we slept really well despite being in a double bed. I love that there’s a fan and AC option. Location is perfect but you still need a car to get around. It suited us perfectly for 2 adults and 2 kids and was easy to go on tours from this location.

Not a busy centre but certainly had enough features and options for us. Wonderful natural environment - as well as being within close proximity to sensational nature features.
Preferred Hilo to Waikiki.

Hilo is so different than other parts of Hawaii.
Hilo is so different than other parts of Hawaii. It had an old-fashion-y feel to it. Older buildings in downtown and beautiful moss covered bridges. Gorgeous giant, old banyan trees and other beautiful trees and plants you dont get to see in other more popular locations. Has amazing waterfalls a short drive away and lots of farms that give the area a quaint feel.
The B&B is in a fantastic location, a very quick walk into town, but with the ocean literally on your doorstep. Our beautiful room backed right on the ocean and it was wonderful going to sleep with the sounds of waves. Every morning the cooked breakfast was delicious, and we really appreciated the useful shelves in the B&B filled with snacks, useful pamphlets, bug spray and sunscreen. Our hosts were very friendly and gave fantastic recommendations on things to see and do during our stay in Hilo. We would highly recommend a stay here!
Absolutely loved my stay here. Such a cool hotel. Loved the vintage rooms, wood carvings in the lobby, free breakfast and being located within walking distance to everything downtown. Staff was just amazing! At a fraction of the cost of the other hotels I stated in during my vacation on the island, the Wild Ginger is a super value. Wish I would have saved the money and stayed there my entire stay. Not a luxury hotel by any means but in many ways better. This is the hotel if you want that true Hawaiian experience.
- Good breakfast and on-site restaurant
- Quiet (I read that birds could be noisy but it was OK for us, maybe we were lucky?)
- Although the hotel starts to be old (or look old), it is in a good state
- Big onsite parking
- Nice view if you have a room with sea view (not our case)
- Relatively spacious room + terrace and comfy beds
- Not too far from main tourist attractions (waterfalls and tropical gardens, surfer's beach, Mauna Kea and Volcano park, and others)
The view was great. If you can get an ocean front room on floors 6-8 you won't be disappointed with the view. The hotel was close to Mauna Kea, the Volcano National Park, the zoo, and many other attractions on the Hilo side of the Big Island. There also were many great beach parks nearby that were good for seeing fish and sea turtles. We loved the little convenience store right outside the hotel and Coconut Island.
Diana and son gave helpful advice about the area ...were generous sharing home made dishes at dinner time, ...great at keeping things organized in the spotless bathroom and kitchen common areas.
.I will return ! I stayed for 5 nites...made friends with other guests who were solo travelers...much nicer then a hotel setting, for me !
The view of the oceanfront rooms cannot be beat - the house is about 18 inches from the cliff. We loved watching the ships come into Hilo Bay every morning. The room was spacious and beautiful and they service the room with clean sheets and towels every day. Free ample parking.
Jean is an amazing host, her cottage is well equipped and she takes good care of her place. It’s located only a few minutes by car from Hilo center (a lot of groceries store available), you can easily access beaches, waterfalls, caves, volcano park etc. Mahalo !
The facility was the best ‘value for money’ in the area. The free local buses meant we could go anywhere. No restaurant in this hotel but that was okay as we went elsewhere, no problem.
I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone else travelling on a budget.
Easy access to main roads in and out of Hilo. Open view from balcony to sunrise side of the island. Communal kitchen perfect for meeting others and chatting about where to go and what to see. Host lives on site and is welcoming and helpful.
Could not beat the view. Staff was exceptional. Rooms quite comfy. Hilo is not Kona so do not expect it to be the same. Hilo is old Hawaii and the amazing staff embody the Hawaiian spirit of aloha. Very special place.
This was the best place we stayed in Hawaii. The sunrise room was absolutely beautiful and much bigger than the pictures appear. We were very comfortable staying here. The breakfast is also absolutely fantastic.
Wonderdul place in a wonderful area. I was there with my daughter and we loved that place. We took a Bath in the fall and suring the day we were out For excursions. Is close to the center of Hilo
Nice location on the Hilo side. Room and bathroom clean. Small fridge, microwave, coffee maker. TV. Would have been nice to stay longer. Maybe next time. Very close to Hawaii Volcano Park
Quiet, comfortable and you had a choice of pool or beach!. Troy answered all of my questions promptly and professionally.
So close to everything in Hilo town.
