The business is named after the ‘famous’ hippo NONKULULEKO.This renowned animal took off in 2008 and had been wandering freely for months, apparently starting her journey from the St Lucia wetlands in Maputaland some 250 kilometres north of Durban.It was only towards the end of June when she started nearing the populated coastal resort towns which lie about 50 kilometres north of Durban that Nonkululeko started attracting public and media attention. From then on her future lay in the balance, even although authorities repeatedly warned the public to keep clear of the animal.It found sanctuary in Riyadh Verulam on a farm alongside the banks of Umdloti River owned by my precious family who inherited this property from our dear grandfather. It was shot because it was believed to pose a danger to its human neighbours.A year later there was a divine intervention as in a dream it was revealed that there will be a business in our family and it will be called NONKULULEKO meaning “freedom”.

Neelandren and Roxanne Naidoo desire to build on their business model combining their years of experience and equipping in the corporate world. Our childhood births from this beautiful town and through the emergence of King Shaka International Airport and Dube Tradeport we hope to promote our town in every way. Verulam's population is a representation of South Africa's richness of diversity and tradition. A town of flavours, colours, sounds and magnificent people.
