Upington on Sundays we were informed previously that everywhere was closed and therefore no food available if you were not self catering.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived there to find a vere busy small commercial area consisting of restaurants, take aways and a supermarket catering for everything and open until 20.00h even on Sunday. There is lots of parking, lots of accommodation, town was quiet otherwise, and there is the mighty orange river running through which is of interest to visitors. If you plan to stay longer there are some cultural interests in the town and any shopping needs can be found therein on weekdays. It is a very hot town in the Kalahari desert region but with unusual vegetation.
There is the Orange river wine producing farms where you can taste and buy if you are so inclined!

Something called Ox Steakhouse, had tea 3pm and went back for dinner. Excellent.
We struggled to get to a lookout place over the river.
We will definitely get a map of the places worthwhile to visit.

Upington is a very nice town along the Orange River. There are some great places to eat and stay. Ideally you should have your own transport, as there are not a lot of public transport options, except for taxis. Places that I can recommend includes the Orange River wine tasting cellars, Red Ox restaurant, the donkey monument, Sakkie se Arkie (great for river cruises / sunset cruises) and Bi-Lo restaurant. Another nice option for dining is Cafe Zest.

Very hot in January but I love summer so fine with that and our accommodation had aircon. Loads of restaurants and mall is good to visit. Visited the museum and ate at great restaurant called Red Ox situated on the Orange River. Food was phenomenal with large portions and the staff were great!
We stayed at Kalahari Lion's Rest after a trip to the Kgalagadi. It was such a treat to stay here after two weeks of camping! The rooms were very well decorated, clean, and comfortable. You can tell the hosts put a lot of work into giving this place a special charm and it certainly worked! They were able to accomodate safe parking for our car and trailer and also gave great dinner recommendations in town. We would definitely stay here again!
we are at Zest restaurant inside the hotel after returning from a 9hour drive from Lüderitz, Namibia. Food was outstanding. Tastefully presented and full of flavor. Fairly priced for the portion sizes. The food court is serene with a relaxed atmosphere. Try the Moscow Mule cocktail. A real thirst quencher!
Bed linen was clean. Bed and pillows were very comfortable and shower water pressure was great.
Ohh I love the warm welcome we received from the staff. The room was very clean 👌🏽 and smelling fresh.
They have this amazing king size bed that makes one to feel like their in heaven.
The fridge had very child cold bottle water that worl well since Upington is very hot.
There WiFi connection was very good👌🏽
They provided more than enough kitchen & bathroom amenities.
The hosts Brunhilde and Jasper were extremely accommodating and welcoming. The place was well maintained and clean and the location on the rivers edge was awesome.
We were allowed to just be ourselves and make ourselves comfortable anywhere on the property and theee was always someone to assist close by
Secure and enclosed gardens with a pool. Large and comfortable rooms. Close to the mall and road leading out of Upington to Kalaghadi or Nakop border post. The host also own a butchery next door which is convenient. Very friendly and interesting to talk with hosts. A blessed stay.
What an absolute GEM of a spot! SO glad I went with a mate's recommendation because I was NOT disappointed; stunning house, gorgeous surrounds and right on the river!!! My stay as all too brief due to work commitments but I will DEFINITELY be back for a proper holiday!!
The Oasis is a business-style hotel located in downtown Upington. The hotel is fine, but the rooms are a little beat up and in need of rehabbing. The breakfast is good with a buffet and eggs cooked to specification. Okay for one night, but I wouldn't linger.
Burger and Aletta went above and beyond to help, from the booking process to helping us with a tyre problem. The cottage was of a high standard with air conditioning in the Upington heat and for us, just far enough out of town. Highly recommended.
The place overall, the way it is situated on the river banks. The breeze is great, the staff are a marvel. The swimming pool. Wish they could open the small gate that takes to the river though, that would be totally awesome.
Super friendly host and staff. Very accommodating and helpful. It was our first trip to Upington and after an 8/9 hour drive from JhB all you to do is wash, get into bed and sleep and it gave us that and more.
Location great close to mall and restaurants. Friendly host who welcomes his guests on arrival. Good shower. Huge kitchen area with all the basic requirements for self catering.
Really wonderful location and cute chalet on the river and a stellar place for birdwatching. Lovely stopover stop in the quieter and greener part of Upington.
