Too much imported stuff not enough handmade stalls. A bit disappointing to see the same rubbish. We did buy some traditional ballbaubles that had been hand blown and hand painted which were beautiful and now on our Christmas tree! We bought al our chocolate from the shops as couldn't see a stall for chocolate. The market was very pretty and the decorations were so gorgeous!
Come early in the day as the stalls close around 18.00. Quite limited stalls. Probably wouldn't come to Bruges JUST for the market but take it as a slight added bonus if you happen to be here when they're on.
For food and drink it's great but it's not really a Christmas market with lots of things to buy. There is another market that has more up one of the streets. However it looks beautiful and of course has the ice skating in the middle and there's so many little cheap eateries and bars it's still great fun and really gets you feeling Christmassy. We loved it.
Sunday seemed much busier than saturday. Stalls are actually pretty good value for money in the Markt square. Recommend the Braadwurst stall served in freshly baked baguettes and look out for the stall serving gluwein for 2.50Euro. Also go for the fresh Brussels waffles not the sugar Liege waffles as these are just re-heated whereas the brussels waffles are cooked from batter fresh in front of you and are bigger!
The one in the main square is sad and tatty, however if you walk around there are a couple more which is slightly better. Beyond that Bruges at Christmas is just magical... Don't let the main market put you off a visit but don't go just for the market!
What a disappointment. It was very small and the offerings were quite limited. I wasn't able to hit a time when everything was open at once. I find the markets in Germany and France to be a much better experience.
