this church is one of the most recognisable features of old Tallinn as it is rather tall and stands on a hill, so it is a shape well loved by the locals. It is well worth the visit on a day the tower is open for climbing. Yes, they will charge you but it goes towards the upkeep. If you walk around the church you will find a gravestone in a niche there. Have a closer look and find a tiny frog sitting on the chest of the stone figure laying there. Legend says ( and there are many variations of this) that the master builder on the tower wanted to be famous for building this, the most prominent of church steeples, so he wanted to place the cross on top of the steeple himself. He made a pact with the devil who promised him success, but the price would be high. the man agreed in his greed and no sooner had he placed the cross in its place that he stumbled and fell to his death on the very spot the grave now is positioned. When he was found, a frog leapt out of his mouth and sat on his chest to always be a remider of that pact with the devil and the greed within him.
Climb the +/- 300 steps to the top. The view over the old town and the ferry terminals is stunning. It's my favourite thing in Tallinn and it was free though it was written you had to pay a euro to go to the top.
It was quite hard to get to the top of the tower - steps are narrow and curly. But when you finally reach the top the view from the tower makes you quickly forget about the effort. The entrance costs 3euro.
