Roman Theatre & Amphitheatre Highlights

Roman Theater
A spectacular symbol of Mérida’s past, the Roman Theater wasn't always so well known. Almost completely buried for centuries, this now-iconic landmark was finally unearthed in 1910. Today its 2,000-year-old marble columns and statues have been restored to their former glory, and the ancient stage is the setting for productions of Greek and Roman plays during the city’s annual summer theater festival.
Roman Ampitheater
Roman entertainment didn’t get much better than this. Right in the heart of the city, this ancient amphitheater once drew in the crowds to watch gory gladiatorial battles and staged animal hunts. Up to 15,000 bloodthirsty spectators would pack into the arena’s tiered seating, with the best viewing spots reserved for VIP guests.
