The kind lady at the front desk was so helpful with information. She was friendly and took her time to explain to us about the bus to the train. She looked up the schedule, explained where to go to catch the bus and how much it would cost. She knew where to send us to eat when our Hotel restaurant was closed for the holiday. When we didn’t know it was a holiday she took the time to tell us about Victory Day. She was a world of knowledge and so much help to us. the beds were comfortable, there were extra pillows in the closet, the location is the best, the shower had plenty of warm/hot water and very good pressure and we had a view out our Juliet balcony and the river of Mont Saint Michel.

Mont Saint Michel Abbey

One of Normandy's most captivating landmarks, this historic island-commune overlooks the mouth of the Couesnon river. Located 600 metres from the coast, pilgrims used to visit the island's famous abbey during low tide, while the rising waters ensured it remained protected against would-be assailants. Three museums now recount the island’s storied past.

If you want to walk, you can reach the island in about 30 minutes, but the free shuttle bus is a very convenient option, running frequently throughout the day. Access to the island is free, but try to avoid peak hours. The best times to visit are early in the morning, before day-trippers arrive, or later in the evening (in August, around 7 pm was very quiet). Keep in mind that late at night it gets busy again, as access is open until late. Most restaurants close in the evening, so don’t count on having a late dinner on the island. Book your table in advance if you want to eat there, otherwise you may go hungry. The Abbey is extraordinary and definitely worth visiting, but again, avoid peak hours unless you want to spend much of your day waiting on the steps. Check the tide schedule before your visit and find a good spot on the fortress walls - watching the tide is a unique spectacle. The sunset is also beautiful, visible both from the walls and from the platform at the entrance to the island. If you’re staying overnight in the area, one of the hotels on the mainland can be a good option. Bring some water, soft drinks, or snacks with you. There is a local shop, but it closes early, so in the evening you won’t be able to buy anything.

Way too overcrowded in the summer and little attempt to control the number of people ascending open this small village. The lone for the abbey was hours long even with prepurchadf tickets. Absolutely suffocating. Definitely recommend arriving after 7pm.

It was really incredible to see it in-person.

It was really incredible to see it in-person. We went in the low season, around April, which we recommend. It can get pretty crowded. We don't advise eating at the restaurants as they are tourist traps and heavily over-priced for what you are getting. We packed some sandwiches and decided to get dessert on the mount but to look for a fresh crêpe was almost impossible as most of the vendors reheat ready-made crêpes for about 3-5 euros! We were told to try restaurants like La Sirene as it was quite good and reasonably-priced, but we didn't get the chance to. Overall, a great monument and the abbey is worth a see.
