A bit of a walk (about 25 minutes) from the twon centre but nice to walk along the canal bank and there is quite a lot of activity on the canal (4 trawlers passed through on my 40 minute visit) so it is interesting to watch the swing bridge operation
Lovely to be beside and watch the water. Decent paved path for wheelchair users and a nice stroll for friends and family. I recommend visiting when the weather is warm and avoiding during stormy days.
Not to be missed! Neptune's Staircase (series of locks on the western end of the canal) shows the amazing engineering and construction of the early 1800s. The path alongside the entire canal (to Inverness) can be walked or biked, and some even canoe or kayak. We rented e-bikes in Fort William and did about 16 miles out and then back to see the canal and one of the lochs in the system--really gave us a sense of the importance of the canals in Scotland during the 1800s.
Amazingly beautiful canal with breath taking views. The technology of the locks, is still grand even today. The lock keepers, and all the folks along the canal are open welcoming and happy to help. Don't Micah DJ MacDougal butcher shop in Fort Augustus for Bridies and sausage rolls.
I sailed the Canal from Inverness to Fort Williams and it is a spectacular experience! In Inverness I guess it is less spectacular than at Neptunes Staircase near Fort Williams, but you do get a good impression 👍🏻
