If you feel tempted to do the red route as well as the blue route then do the red cliff top first. DOWN the 162 steps then along to the amphitheatre (now closed). Walk back (downhill) past the organ pipes to the beach. Then along to the Causeway (flat). The blue route walk back to the top is a steady gradient. Bus back is free to NT members. I stupidly did blue down and red back (legs still recovering).
If you go through the visitor centre it costs over £11 each unless you're a NT member which is very expensive for a natural formation given to us by the earth, you even have to pay for the bus down to the causeway!!!
This is very well done, with the inside exhibition area outlining everything to do with the giants causeway, to the shuttle bus that takes you the site with audio equipment to listen to along the way highlighing the interesting facts ......
Walk if staying at slieve league B and B excellent place great breakfast and Kevin is gracious enough to take you into town into Carriick for dinner if needed and pick you up working around his other guest pick up times. Thank you Kevin . Me and my 3 kids walked about 45 minutes to top of cliff area and back was wonderful walk- other possibility is stay in Donegal and take a tour to the cliffs -but I must say if staying in slieve league BnB take a taxi 12-16 euros each way to go to folk village of Gkencolmcille and go back in time on the coast 10 minutes away and experience 7 houses like back when there werentvconveniences of modern life today - and have lunch and look at amazing knitted works to wear
It is possible to visit the Causeway without going through the visitor centre which was very expensive. (although you need to park out on the road as car park and centre entry same price. National Trust members free. Walked down to the rocks, got the bus back up, cheating I suppose but for 1 euro was worth it!
If you have a National Trust membership sticker, bring it with you on your car to gain free parking in the adjacent car park. You don't need to go via the visitor's centre with its associated charge - you can walk down to the famous stones completely free.

The outside of the house does not prepare you for how beautiful it is inside, grand staircase, our bedroom was large and the bathroom enormous. All beautifully furnished in keeping with the age of the house. The breakfast was superb served by a very friendly lady. Portrush is not very attractive and a lot of work going on in preparation for the Open next year but it is worth a visit just to stay at Antrim House and a good location for visiting Giants Causeway.
