Call to enquiry about the opening times (they are not always matching the website information) and about tours. Do ask the volunteers staying in the rooms to monitor the visits: they are passionate and knowledgable and happy to share stories and facts with visitors. We learnt a lot by talking with them.
Nice building. There was an event on that night which meant loud music till early hours. I was warned prior to arriving but not to booking. As I arrived in had a slight problem with debit card. It was late on Saturday night and couldn't contact bank. My mobile phone had run out of charge as well. I ended up £10 short and said I could handle it in the morning. Receptionist said it was policy to take all the money now. I asked the manager who replied the same. So they were willing to kick me out at night because of this...policy they say! I did manage to sort this out when they lent me anow extension lead so I could plug my phone charger in and sort the problem out and pay the balance. Room was a bit scruffy. ..needed a refurbishment.
Fantastic place. It is close enough to Derby that one can get taxi service out there and back, if without a vehicle. Cycling to it would be a great option when the weather is good. Although the better-known nearby Chatsworth House is dazzling and well worth a visit, the style and grandeur of Keddleston impressed me more.
