Lots of fun things to see and do and just a nice place to hang out. Loads of lunch spots; we would recommend the Whiskey and Haggis arcade and suggest try the Robert Burns Famous Haggis with whiskey sauce; one portion is enough for 2 people.

The real St Mary's Close.
The real St Mary's Close. Amazing "Museum" which is actually a series of uncovered streets that were originally built beneath the current road, below the town. When the plague hit, the poor were entombed there. The history of it was mind-boggling. A must to see. The Mile itself just great to walk, stop, sip a drink or two. The Dome restaurant and Bars wonderous at Xmas. Fantastic array of external and internal Christmas lights, trees.

Loved walking up and down the Royal Mile, it was the Fringe Festival while were there, it was a hive of activity and street performers were dotted along the mile. There are also some interesting shops selling souvenirs, if that's your thing

DON'T go in peak season!
DON'T go in peak season! The historical interest is completely obfuscated by the crowds and tacky souvenir shops. Taking a walking tour with Mercat tours at least gives one interesting historical information

Hopefully you'll get a chance to walk the entire length.
Hopefully you'll get a chance to walk the entire length. Always a bustling area with lots of interesting things to do and see. Too much to list here. Check online. the Whisky adventure is a must for those who like a tipple, Camera Obscura at the castle end. Holyrood Palace and park at the other. Book the top end restaurants well in advance of your visit.

The key pickup location is very close and the process extremely easy. You can also leave bags there for a small charge.
The apartment is in an incredible location, right off the Royal Mile, and is especially amazing if you're a film fan as the doorway and street have featured in several movies. The apartment is quite basic but perfectly comfortable and very clean, and the hosts were extremely friendly and responsive, messaging me several times during my stay and responding quickly to any queries, which was highly appreciated.
Location is dead center, very close to the royal mile. The renovation of the apartment is done to a very good standard. The styling of the apartment is excellent. One side of my room was facing the castle overlooking the historic Greyfriars Kirk and other side to the street. Would absolutely recommend this place
Loved my stay at voco Edinburgh Haymarket! Modern, clean hotel with super helpful staff. Perfect location near Princes Street and a short walk to the Royal Mile. Delicious breakfast with a variety of options. Highly recommend!
The apartment was in an excellent location, just off the Royal Mile. It was clean, spacious and had everything we needed for a short stay. The kitchen was well equipped for making meals and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was great, with a nice shower. It was easy to check in, with someone on reception to hand over the keys when we arrived.
the rooms are comfortable, well decorated and have everything you need. the location is ok, close to the attractive tourist street - royal mile. I'm sorry - the breakfast was the poorest I've ever had in a hotel.
We stayed here last minute when we were in Edinburgh and how grateful i am for that! The pictures match the apartment exactly. Its located in a lovely quiet street just a walk away from the Palace and Royal Mile.
The location of the hotel was perfect for exploring the old town. I loved how close it was to the Royal mile and it halved the walking up hill time. The room we had was a Superior Double room and was so comfortable. The rest of our party were in a triple and thought the facilities in the room were fantastic. Breakfast was fresh and had plenty of options.
The location is perfect, close to Haymarket station and short walk to Princess St, Royal Mile and Grassmarket. It's a lot more modern than the Point A in Glasgow and very comfortable for a budget hotel. I'd definitely stay again.
The hotel is a great spot right at the Royal Mile. That and Sean Connery/Goldfinger poster on the wall was pretty much the highlight. The hotel itself is quite alright. Nothing fancy and the bed is a simple bed cupboard which was a little bit of a surprise. Breakfast was OK and the stay overall wasn't that bad but we changed hotel (as planned) after a few days and had another hotel for pretty much the same price which was on a completely different level. Still, the hotel gets an OK rating.
All the facilities and comfort of a hotel but with the bonus of having so much more space and having your own wee kitchen. The beds were so comfy. Loved all the character features. The security of knowing only people with the door code could enter the property. Being just off the royal mile, the apartment was very handy for all the places we planned to visit which was great! 😊

Walking from the Castle down the Royal Mile to Holyrood House with the new Parliament en route takes some beating in terms not just of historical content but also of ease of travel-it's a straight downhill walk
Walking from the Castle down the Royal Mile to Holyrood House with the new Parliament en route takes some beating in terms not just of historical content but also of ease of travel-it's a straight downhill walk. On the way talk to people-some of the locals actually know a lot about their City and take a pride in it.

Giles on the Royal Mile is several hundreds of years old
St. Giles on the Royal Mile is several hundreds of years old. My family attended a pipe organ recital there one evening. What an awesome and thunderous sound that huge organ made, but could produce the most delicate melodies as well. Highly recommend taking some time to study the beautiful architecture as well as the gorgeous stained glass windows and the history surrounding this or any cathedral, for there is always a history to be known.

As a city Edinburgh is steeped in history, all the areas off the Royal Mile has a tale to tell. The city offers a number of good tours both by bus and feet for getting to know the past and how people lived. The city also offers an insight to famous personalities of the past such as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Rabbie Burns
