After flying to Iceland, with freezing rain and sleet coming down, what could be better than have a good soak in geothermal pools? The Vesturbjaerlaug is a very reasonably priced and delightfully retro public bath, nevertheless with very tidy (and fresh, not at all damp!) locker rooms. There is a range of outdoor pools of different sizes and temperatures. The place was easily reached by local bus (use the Klappid app for tickets and route planner) and open quite late. Also, there was a perfect place to have a bite to eat (and drink) afterwards across the street, called Kaffihús Vesturbæjar (they had several vegan options, too!).
Reykjavik's best bargain. Skip the rip-off Blue Lagoon and just go where the locals go for a fraction of the price. £6.50 / $10 to get in with five different temperatures of pool, etc. open early morning until late evening. Prudes beware: you do have to thoroughly scrub yourself down naked in the showers before you can get in the pools as they are chemical-free and the locals will publicly condemn you if you don't!
I think this is the pool we went to. Large indoor (lanes and children and diving). Two HOT pools outside, then a further four pools: one very cold, one lanes, one warm/hot and another warm with fountains for children.
We went to the Vesturbæjarlaug - just a great ordinary pool where the locals go - how lucky they are.
