We had an amazing stay at Hotel Valeri, great room, comfy beds, splendid location, 15 minutes from the Colosseum. But what made the experience most wonderful was the staff. Francesco welcomed us warmly and gave us great advice on places to visit in the city and Wassim was a great host when we arrived after a long day of sightseeing. I would recommend Hotel Valeri to anyone who travels to Rome.

The Colosseum

The fights! The glory! This iconic arena specialized in gory ends. Built in the 1st century, it held up to 80,000 spectators who came to witness gladiatorial combat and bloody reenactments of naval battles. When you look up at the stands, it doesn’t take much imagination to hear the deafening roar of the crowds or to picture the fierceness on display.

Get there early and there will be less crowds. Bring your passport as they did ask for it. (I think you could have gotten in with just a picture ID, but same yourself the time. There is an elevator they can be used.

In my opinion it is highly overrated.

In my opinion it is highly overrated. On the outside it looks impressive, but once you're in - it's just a ruin. There are other Roman arenas that still function - operas, theatre, concert halls (like Verona or Pula) - this one is just a walkthrough. Sad, really.

It's a beautiful place and if you have access to multiple places, I would recommend booking at least half a day, because it's not exactly small. If you only have access to the arena, then 30 minutes is enough. Entry is at a specific time (there's no point in getting there earlier) - they really strictly let you in at a specific time. Toilets are available inside (unless you have bought a ticket for just the arena).

This was a bit of a disappointment.

This was a bit of a disappointment. We bought a guided tour but it was so crowded that we had to wait in line for a long time before even entering the site. And when we got in, there were so many people it was tough to hear our guide. Still, if we didn't have a guide, I'm sure it would have been much worse.

The Coliseum was fascinating, but when you leave, watch out for pickpockets and thieves. They operate extensively in this area. We saw two couples who were victims of unsuccessful attacks of these persons. There is no policing around this area, which makes you wonder why, as it is well known for its pick pockets and opportunistic theives.

The location was great! We were so close to the colosseum and Roman forum. Right outside is a bar and a restaurant that are convenient, as well as many other wonderful places to eat and get gelato. We were accommodated with a late check in the process was clearly communicated and very smooth. The staff were very helpful and kind. The apartment was absolutely adorable and very comfortable. We cannot say enough good things about our stay.

The location is excellent! Walking distance to The Colosseum, The Trevi Fountain, The Spanish Steps, and much more! It's a little hike(15-20 minutes), but there is a lot to see on the way! There are 4 great restaurants right in the square, a place to get drinks and a place to get pasteries/gelato! The Staff was wonderful! The hotel is clean and comfortable.

The apartment is very comfortable. Looks just like the pictures. Quiet at night. Very Little street noise that gets drowned out by the AC. The host is very friendly and accommodating with meeting us upon arrival. We like the Monti area and that it was a 10 minute walk to the colosseum. Easy to find the metro (5-10 minute walk) to get to the Vatican. Plenty of cafes and restaurants near by. Grocery store close by as well. We would stay again.
