The queue was half way around St Peter’s Square but honestly, it moved so quickly that we were inside within 30 minutes. A beautiful building. Tip : Don't get caught behind a school group as they take ages to get through bag security as they all have rucksacks!

Book a private or small group tour ahead of time, will be well worth it. We did the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peters Basilica - skip the lines tour. If you don't have a reservation you will be wasting time for hours in line to get in Women must have their shoulders covered.

Another HUGELY IMPRESSIVE building but not easy to wander and explore when it is crowded. Visited on a Papal Sunday and could not fail to be impressed by the attendant Cardinals (all with mobile phones) and the crowds. Visited again during a rainstorm and almost had the whole place to myself...recommended!!

The staircase up the dome was extremely narrow, like both shoulders would touch the walls simultaneously. There was also a small spiral staircase without a rail but rather a rope in the middle to hold onto. It isn't for everyone, but the views were spectacular. I don't think of myself as claustrophobic, and I am very adventurous, but this pushed my limits.

We took an "early morning " tour and it was still crowded. Find a tour ahead of your trip with "skip-the-line" tickets. There's no way to avoid the crowds so just be prepared and do what you can to optimize the tour (early morning with skip other line tickets is my best suggestion. Glad we did that.

    We spent 8 hours here.

We spent 8 hours here. There is so much art to admire and if you are Catholic you can attend daily mass around 5pm. The gift shops are great as well. Know this... when attending an audience with the Pope, you can not bring any items that could be considered weapons such as glass items or steel water bottles in thru security.
